Find me a meme!

I saw this tiktok meme while I was browsing the internet and I had to say it struck a nerve with me after learning that mitochondria was absorbed and somehow taken along for the evolutionary ride to affect every living organism to date. It’s mind blowing to think a simple thing like a single bacterium engulfing another organism changed the course of history. What’s more, it’s wild to think we’re here now discussing this fact as the end product of this happy coincidence. As we continue to expand our understanding of cellular structures and mechanisms it seems somehow poetic that everyone still remembers the line, “Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.”

Scientific Literacy Essay

End of term reflection

As this term draws to a close I am reflecting on the enormity of the subject matter ahead of me and the mysteries that have still yet to be solved, it encourages me. Seeing the minutiae of cellular function helped drive home the intricacies of the humble cell, whether it was the nuclear membrane and the associated protein gate-keepers, the mitochondria’s Kreb cycle, understanding what DNA is and how a phosphodiester bond acts as backbone for the structure, or building proteins with ribosomes I’m awed by the scope of it all.

From here I plan to take the knowledge I have acquired to work on studying synthetic biology and doing small personal research along with establishing a local bio-hacker space.
