Introduction to Cybersecurity

This course provides an overview of the field of cybersecurity. It covers core cybersecurity topics including computer system architectures, critical infrastructures, cyber threats and vulnerabilities, cryptography, information assurance, network security, and risk assessment and management. Students are expected to become familiar with fundamental security concepts, technologies, and practices. This course provides a foundation for further study in cybersecurity.

The course objectives are:

  • Identify and prioritize information assets;
  • Identify and prioritize threats to information assets;
  • Define an information security strategy and architecture;
  • Plan for and respond to intruders in an information system;
  • Describe legal and public relations implications of security and privacy issues; and
  • Present a disaster recovery plan for recovery of information assets after an incident.

Course Material

Assignment 1

Perform research on a significant cybersecurity breach within the past ten (10) years.  Use the ODU library and/or appropriate Internet resources to perform content discovery.  After you have completed reading through the research materials, write a 1-3 page paper discussing the specific cybersecurity breach. The paper needs to address the following:

  • What were the cybersecurity vulnerabilities?
  • What threat(s) exploited the vulnerabilities?
  • What were the repercussions of the incident?
  • What cybersecurity measures could have been taken to mitigate the consequences or prevent the incident?

You have been asked to design a security policy for a corporate information system consisting of on-premises web, application, and database servers.  The database servers store very sensitive data that must be protected. Discuss five important issues that should be addressed in the security policy.
