Visit PrivacyRights.org to see the types of publicly available information about data breaches. How might researchers use this information to study breaches? What branch or branches of social science do you think would benefit the most from a site hosting this information?

Researchers can utilize this site as a comprehensive resource to study data breaches from across
the United States. The Data Breach Chronology compiles publicly reported data breach notifications
from various U.S. government agencies into an easy-to-read and searchable database. It includes
data going back as far as 2006. This site would allow researchers to analyze trends over time.
including the frequency of breaches, affected areas/states, and types of data that were
compromised. This type of information would allow researchers to form an in-depth analysis, such as
determining which industries are most vulnerable or how breach methods evolve. The platform also
offers interactive visuals, including maps showing breach distributions by state and timelines
showing breach occurrences over the years, helping researchers to identify geographic hotspots and
patterns in data breaches. Sociologists could use this to study how frequent data breaches affect
public trust in corporations, healthcare providers, or government institutions. Researchers have used
this site to examine the impact of data breaches on healthcare outcomes, such as increased
mortality rates following hospital breaches (Choi & Johnson, 2019). Political scientists can analyze
the effectiveness of state or federal cybersecurity legislation by comparing breach frequency and
severity across states or industries. Economists can study the impact of data breaches on markets,
firms, and consumer behavior. Criminologists who have a focus in cybercrime and digital
victimization can use this to study patterns of cyberattacks, the profile of threat actors, and the types
of victims targeted. I think any social science field interested in privacy, trust, cybercrime, or human
behavior would benefit from a site hosting this information.
