I believe that the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime will continue to grow as technology develops. However, let us define cybercrime first. Cybercrime legal definition is “cyber-related behavior that is against the law” (1DisciplineCJ). This relates to black-hats and grey hats hackers. They break the law for fun or financial gain.
Furthermore, this overlaps with the malware section we discussed because it is cybercrime. Another example of cybercrime is phishing attacks because they exploit the person to gain information about accounts or to reset passwords for accounts and gain unauthorized access. Another thing to mention is that some cybercrime is white-collar crime, and not all cybercrime is terrible because we can learn more about our society (1DisciplineCJ). For that reason, cybercrime is not bad. However, people should still avoid doing it because of the legal situation.
Now, let’s change roles to criminal justice. What is criminal justice, “Criminal justice is the structure of laws, rules, and agencies designed to hold criminals accountable for their misdeeds and help them to restore their victims as much as possible,” explains Lizbeth Meredith, former juvenile probation supervisor and victim advocate” (What Is Criminal Justice?). Criminal justice has law enforcement plays a crucial role in investigating and prosecuting cybercrimes. They have to stay updated on the last cybercrimes and develop new tools to counter cybercrime. It is a cat-and-mouse game with criminal justice and cybercrime. Another example of criminal justice is the court system. It is required to punish scammers and hackers that break the law. Without law enforcement and the court system, it would be difficult to arrest criminals.
Additionally, criminal justice relates to the class because of risk management and cybersecurity training. Criminal justice still need to understand risk management to protect themselves from cybercrime better, and they need to be trained and train others about cybersecurity best practices.
