Discussion Board: The IT Organization

John McCarthy’s 1955 Dartmouth Conference is cited as the birth of Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a goal to move computers beyond binary tasks toward “thinking machines”. The text argues that the current generation of AI, specifically Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, will impact your career as significantly as the internet impacted previous generations.

  1. How does the document describe the necessity of understanding AI tools for future professionals?
  2. Discuss the “Data Management” responsibilities mentioned in the text (such as data governance and compliance) and explain why these roles are becoming more critical as AI becomes integrated into business operations.
  3. In your opinion, does the integration of AI change where IT “fits” within the broader structure of a modern organization?

From this week’s reading, the document describes AI literacy as a requirement, and not optional, for future professionals. Just as the internet reshaped and catalyzed many careers, the current generation of AI applications has steadily positioned itself as a tool future professionals must understand and utilize to remain competitive.

The “Data Management” section from the document emphasizes the current reality organizations face regarding data organization and structuring. Organizational data needs to follow the foundation of the CIA triad. Confidentiality involves ensuring that sensitive information is accessed only by authorized individuals or systems. Integrity guarantees that data is trustworthy, accurate, and has not been altered or tampered with. Availability ensures that authorized users have reliable and unobstructed access to data and systems exactly when they need them.

Being that AI systems rely entirely on the quality, legality and structure of the data given for their training, the organization’s responsibility to perform and maintain data governance and compliance has increased. Lack of data governance could lead to biased models, regulatory violations, organizational liabilities and inefficient AI systems. Roles in governance, risk and compliance are becoming more critical due to AI’s amplified necessity for “clean” data.

In my opinion, the integration of AI does change where IT “fits” within the broader structure of a modern organization because if used correctly, AI makes IT a strategic partner in business operations. AI can now assist with solving tickets, the hiring process, financial forecasting, chatbots for customer interactions, marketing and much more. With IT managing the AI systems, AI ensures IT holds a seat at the strategic operations table.
