Media “Diet” is a term I’ve recently become familiar with, a term to describe how you consume your media, basically. I consume sports in a multitude of ways if i’m being honest with myself. I watch a lot of professional sports with the many apps they have now made us subscribe to, and I sit on my couch watching on my tv a lot, but I also will go to a bar or restaurant occasionally and watch with my friends. I also watch highlights of games that I missed on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube! I watch highlight videos fans have made because they tend to be more entertaining than watching the reporters talk about it. I follow a lot of Photographers, videographers, social media coordinators, and athletes, and keep up with specific players, games, and changes that way. This is a huge change from five years ago. I was back home in California five years ago, and being from a pretty big sports family, I mainly consumed my sports media in person. I went to a lot of sporting events, collegiate games, professional games, and high school games. I was constantly outside and experiencing them in real time (a more fun way to do it). In the next five years, I predict my diet to go back to how it was when I was back home because I plan to move back home after graduation! There are quite a few places and schools to watch here in Virginia but California has a lot of professional sports and a lot of D1 colleges that make watching a little more entertaining. I also plan to work at a college when I graduate, so I will obviously be watching those games and consuming them that way. I will be on my phone, laptop, and in my camera so much with work that I think it will push me even more to want to go watch in person instead of on the TV or phone. If I could wave a magic wand and make one change to the sport communication landscape, it would be to have more focus around athletes’ mental health in every regard. Athletes have a lot of pressure on them already, but adding on crazy fans who make them feel worse, it is a disaster for their mental health. They need more focus on them specifically and more general awareness to the fans and people watching to be more conscious of what they say and do, and how it could be affecting their favorite athletes.
