This “Quest” project, I decided to use my penpal’s expertise to develop a social media internship strategy, specifically for creating content for a professional sports team close to my heart, the Gold State Warriors. I chose to go this route because I know I want to work in social media for a professional team, I have been to a lot of games as a fan and I see how fast-paced they are and I know I can work at that pace. I love the creativity aspect of it and the excitement every element brings. I chose the Golden State Warriors particularly because I am from the Bay Area and I personally think we have the best fans.

I developed this idea as not only do I need to complete an internship soon to graduate but internships are amazing ways to build not only your portfolio but your network as well. I notice with a lot of professional teams no matter the sport, the accounts are posting in real time and engaging with their fans. They do a great job of taking the content either sent to them from the photographers or other social media coordinators and creating a graphic to give an update on the game on their social media.

To bring this idea to life, I started by looking up the warriors social media platforms and understanding when and how often they post before, during, and after the game. I then created a mini design plan to create content as if it were game day, including a pre game “hype” post, a live halftime update, a funny meme of one of the players to connect with the fans, and a final score post. Each post was created intentionally with fan engagement in mind.

During this process, I wanted to make sure my posts were realistic and lined up with what would be expected of a social media intern. I made sure to include captions and use emoji’s and hashtags as that is what they do on their socials now. This project gave me an idea of how hard it would be to do this quickly but also gave me practice doing so. It gave me the practice of not only coming up with a content strategy but making sure I have the correct terminology, roster names, and graphics needed to productively get this content posted. This has given me an opportunity to build my portfolio and add skills and practice when applying to internships for social media roles.
