Analyzing my sports diet has been very informational and fun seeing how my diet has changed over the years. My diet a few years ago was pretty small to be honest, I still loved sports, but I felt a disconnect, not from any particular sport or aspect but from sports in general. I was several years removed from playing in any interscholastic sport, focusing on my new career in the military and struggling to find time for all of my interests and hobbies. Sports was one of those interests that while the love and excitement was there, for one reason or another I found myself drifting away from. After leaving the military and deciding to return to school to finish my degree I also decided to use this time to reconnect with the activities I previously enjoyed but hadn’t participated in, one of those activities I decided to return to was watching sports. Some of my favorite memories growing up as a kid were nights spent yelling at the TV hoping somehow the bears could hear me, going to the local AAA baseball game on a school field trip, or the quite (sometimes) energy on the bus when you and your teammates are heading to a game. Finding my way back to sports has been an amazing journey that in someways felt like I was finding my way back to a piece of myself. A few years ago, my diet could be considered sparse at best, now I am working my way back up to a full plate. In the next five years I plan on consuming more sports and focusing on prioritizing them in my life. I do not have social media so I consume my sports media via the ESPN app, every day I will check the bears news to keep updated along with a few of my other teams like the Cubs, or the Iowa Hawkeyes. I used to be a big fan of going out to sports bars to watch games, however as I’ve gotten older, I now prefer to watch the game at home. There are few things in the sports world I can think of that have changed as drastically in the last few years than streaming, something that has been a learning curve for me in my quest to return to sports. As a kid growing up if you wanted to watch a game you either had to buy a ticket or have cable, now you need to take out a small loan to afford the multitude of streaming services required to watch. If I could wave a magic wand, I would drastically change the way sports media is broadcasted, I would bring back the early 2000’s broadcast model focusing on multiyear TV contracts with networks. I think this would be beneficial to older fans who are not technology savvy, fans who cannot afford the costs of the multiple streaming services, and myself because I hate streaming.
