Exploring Culture

The products and practices was the repetition of learning spanish in and outside of the classroom especially with talkabroad and speaking to a fluent Spanish speaker and learning about their culture and how they see the world which is really amazing. At first the ability to speak spanish for me seemed very difficult and I thought I would never be able to learn but once I started reading the vocabulary and speaking it with my friend outside of class it became more easier and less of a challenge even though I still struggle sometimes but learning Spanish is definitely a readjustment. As my professor describe it’s like turning your english brain off and turn on the spanish one once you start speaking. one thing that I found interesting was how different Spanish speaking countries have different forms of speaking it or use slang in some of their conversations similar to how americans use slang in conversation. Surprisingly learning spanish there was no stereotypes or misconceptions mainly cause i’ve heard from either spanish speakers or from my high school classes that even though spanish is the overall language but their are variations of it for example: Cubans, French, El Salvadorans or even the people of Rio if anything this broadened my horizons

Then, in a short paragraph write your reflection. Some questions that may help you process your reflections are: In what way did these products and practices help you better understand values and attitudes in the Hispanic culture as well as your own? How did these products and practices challenge your worldview? What challenges did these perspectives reveal to you? How did it cause you to work through a stereotype or misconception you had and cause you to view the world from a different perspective? Use specific examples.

Engaging in Communities

When engaging in you community you get this sense of connection and the feeling as if you are not alone and it will give you a purpose and when global community it truly show’s you that people should not separate themselves based of their outward appearances such as race or where they live because in the end we are all equal

this can be compared in talkabroad when me and my spanish speaking partner would discuss our likes and dislikes about our favorite foods and home cooked meals, what we liked and disliked all of this was a global experience

Interpersonal Communication

In talkabroad I did a zoom-like call with a fluent spanish speaker and we talked about our favorite home cooked meals, healthy foods and even hobbies ( likes/dislikes) this was something that was done outside of class and this related to spanish learning cause I was also learning about her country and their restaurants and aspects of their culture.

The talk abroad conversations were very spontaneous and I had to keep up with what my partner was saying to me but overall I understood what she was saying for the most part of the conversation. I have to say speaking spanish in and outside of class may it be with a friend or classmate really helped me with talkabroad granted I wasn’t the best spanish speaker but it wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be and excelling in conversations like these did help because now without the pressure of class work I think I can have fun conversations on my own when it involves speaking spanish to someone who is either fluent or is learning to speak the language and what I have learned for this is to next time try to remember past conversations and apply the same knowledge that I did and just relax and the spanish flow freely

Presentational Speaking

For presentational speaking the students from the class were called on the read a paragraph in spanish and translate it to english. This and the professor asking students to answer him in spanish when he ask’s them questions .

This was not hard considering I would usually speak in spanish and someone else would have to interpret it or I would rarely get called on to have either translate or speak in spanish. This wasn’t really a challenge to me and was probably the most easiest task to overcome and I did excel whenever the professor would call on me to speak in spanish though it was often at times. there’s nothing I would do differently next time

Presentational Writing

for a spanish project I created a flyer that detailed swim club for the summer. Students would later after the submission of the project the professor would ask certain students to read their flyers out loud to the class and another time the class read a blog post in spanish and each student had a section to read.

the flyer involved material from a certain lesson which involved athletic activities. This was easy to do outside of the classroom got done the day it was due and reading it in class was not hard either overall this task was not hard to complete and I excelled in remembering the certain sports that were said in spanish

Interpretive Listening

interpretive listening activities that I have done is listening to audio clips of people speaking spanish and the class would translate and answer the question of the topic the spanish speakers were talking about.

I listened to audio clips of people fluent spanish speakers and the class ( including myself) would have to interpret what they are saying. Outside of class me and my friend would try to communicate with each other in spanish just to brush up on out material and see how we are doing when speaking the language. Overall this isn’t a difficult task to overcome and they way I completed it was not by trying to understand what they were saying but only listening to bits and pieces of material that I have learned and used to to answer the questions.

Interpretive Reading

one interpretive readings in class or outside of class that we did was the reading off our spanish project that involved creating flyers and pamphlets and we would read them outloud to our classmates another example was the creation of google slides and the topic of good health and exercise students also read their projects outloud to each other or the entire class

this was challenging considering I have never done a project like this before and I wasn’t confident in my work so I would have to reassure myself with either advice from a classmate or asking the professor. I would probably ask for me guidance on projects like these and find ways to excel in something pertaining to this.
