CYSE 201S: Cybersecurity and Social Sciences

16th October 2026

Throughout this accelerated course, I have developed a deeper understanding of cybersecurity and the social sciences that influence it. I learned that cybersecurity extends beyond technology, as scientific principles, human behaviors, and the motivations behind cybercrime all plat a role in identifying possible threats and preventing security incidents. By examining data breaches, the motivations behind cybercriminal actions, and the characteristics associated with fake websites, I began to see how researchers utilize such information to identify patterns and develop effective defensive strategies to prevent unauthorized users from achieving their nefarious goals. Moreover, reflecting on my own personal experiences with technology and social media has reinforce the importance of critical thinking, self-awareness, and personal responsibility as there will always be online risks. I also learned that media representation can distort our understanding of cybersecurity by exaggerating certain threats and overlooking the pivotal risks associated with technological daily use. To put everything together, this course has shown me that effective cybersecurity requires both an understanding of the technological vulnerabilities and the human behaviors that can create and exploit them. This knowledge will help and encourage me to approach digital interactions with an interdisciplinary understanding, as cybersecurity and social sciences is about protecting individuals, organizations, and society from their destructive patterns.
