BLUF
In cybersecurity we have the key role to ensure that the exploits are limited and the attacks are neutralized.
What is Attacks on Availability?
Attack on availability is any ransom attack that would hinder a server’s ability to remain functioning as normal. These attacks often include ransomware, malware, disrupted denial of service (DDOS), and some phishing techniques can even be attacks on availability. There are so many attacks that are either attempted or completed on a regular basis but luckily majority are of low success. These attacks can cause outages, disrupt use, or cause the sensitive information to be dispersed.
Recent Attack on Availability
A recent attack that I will be covering is one on a Collins Aerospace airport system which hindered passengers ability to check-in and boarding process at major airports across Europe. This attack occurred in September of this year and resulted in hundreds of delayed flights. They believe the attack occurred via a hacker finding a backend failure and exploiting the system into shutting down, requiring the airlines to do manual check-in and boarding procedures (Center for Strategic and International Studies, n.d.). Also looking into the same site which has recorded the attacks on major defense companies, government agencies, and other large financial attacks since 2006, the numbers are rising at an exponential rate.
Conclusion
After reviewing the recent attack in Europe or just the significance of the attacks on availability we need to continue to strengthen our defense against the hackers who look for the compromises in security. The market is just expanding for internet use and we need to continue to protect those sectors to prevent unnecessary attacks.
