I use photos from the internet all of the time in my lessons for my students. I never thought about having to cite them or gain copyright privileges. Creative Commons make it much easier to not break the copyright laws. I used tuxpi.com to make changes to the Southern Most point picture. I was able to use the vignette and the news border to make it look like a breaking news story. After using these tools, I can see how using different tools to alter pictures or images to gain the students attention. You could highlight a certain feature, add text, or even blur out other distracting portions of the image. Using these editing tools can help make our presentations more focused for the learner. As a librarian, this is something I could use to teach skills or teach the students to use when creating presentations or projects.

With sunbeams through the pines, I am trying to see the sunshine through the chaos we are currently in. A pine tree fell on our house and we are being uprooted from where we have lived for 20 years. It is chaos right now, but I know eventually we will see the sunshine through the pine trees around us that caused the havoc we are currently enduring.

Key West trip cancelled! Our son is graduating high school this year and he wanted to go to Key West to celebrate his graduation. Due to Covid-19, we have had to cancel our trip this year and hopefully reschedule for next year.
Wow Beverly! Your photos are beautiful and I’m glad your trying to focus on the positive during such a hard time for your family. I would like to say I understand what you’re going through as we just finished moving yesterday into a new home, but I truly can’t imagine the hardship you’re enduring right now. I hope you are able to find somewhere to live and settle in a bit soon. Your photo of the sunlight through the trees is a great metaphor for what you’re doing through right now. I also love the breaking news border you used for the Key West Photo. What a neat took to use for students to highlight something important their learning or get them hooked at the beginning of a lesson with the “Breaking News” headline. Hope you are able to reschedule your trip though!

Hey Beverly!
I am really sorry to hear about your house and canceled trip! Keeping a positive mindset and looking for those sunbeams is a nice way to try to get through it.
I really liked your modified image you created. Creating a news bulletin would be an such a fun project for students. I can already think of many ways to integrate into curriculum. I agree that these resources we have learned will be very helpful as future librarians when we are supporting classroom teachers with projects and presentations. My current librarian and I do several co-teaching lessons about how to cite websites but we have never done it with images. It is a lesson I am definitely going to create and use with my students next year.
I like your creative use of the modifier to make the image look like a news story. Great idea! You mention a lot of great uses for these modifying tools in the classroom. When you combine the creative and fun use of the modifiers that you mentioned with lessons on how to verify that you are using and copying images appropriately, as well as cite and give credit for images used, you have a fun and effective lesson that helps kids to prepare for the many uses of images in our digital era where it is so relevant to not just academics but everyday life.
Beverly,
I am so sorry about what happened to your house! I’m glad that all of you are safe! I love what you did with the headline on the Southern Most Point picture. What an awesome way to grab students’ attention!!! I also think they’d like to create their own breaking news image.
Stay strong!
Gray
Thanks! I really liked the news options, I think students would love them.
Beverly, I am so sorry to hear about the damage to your home. We are currently living in trying times with what’s happening in the world right now, and this situation indeed adds to your worries. The picture you chose definitely relates to having a positive attitude in spite of the situation. My thoughts are with you.
I’m also sorry your trip had to be cancelled. I had to cancel my trip to Puerto Rico. I was looking forward to going but they like us has restrictions on what you can do and a curfew. We all want vacations without restrictions so it’s better to wait until it’s safe. Congratulations to you and your son for the high school graduation milestone.
The photo modifications are great and will allow students to be creative and imaginative while doing projects and presentations.
Thank you for your kind words.
