The Chesapeake Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court is a court system in Chesapeake, Virginia that concentrates on matters involving adolescents and domestic relations. Truancy is one of the numerous concerns that the court deals with, and it is a major issue in the area. Truancy is a difficult issue with major ramifications for both kids and society as a whole, and the Chesapeake Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court has been working with community partners to address and collaborate on this issue. In Chesapeake, truancy is a continuous issue, with many pupils missing school for a variety of reasons. This can have serious implications for their schooling, future work opportunities, and even their health and well-being. The Chesapeake Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court understands the importance of addressing truancy and has begun working with community partners to establish successful solutions. The Truancy Reduction Program is one method the court has fostered partnerships with community partners. To handle truancy in a comprehensive and coordinated manner, this program brings together the court system, schools, law enforcement, and other community organizations. Students who are persistently absent from school are recognized and submitted to the court for action through the program. The court then collaborates with the child, their family, and community partners to address the underlying issues causing the student’s truancy. I witnessed this partnership firsthand while shadowing in the Chesapeake Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. The courtroom was packed with people who all shared the same goal: keeping kids in school. Help was provided from members of community groups that provide human assistance to persons who work directly in schools. This type of partnership is required to eliminate truancy and improve a community’s trajectory.
