Throughout this spring semester, being in an online sport communication course has really allowed me to dive into all aspects of this topic. I think the biggest thing that stuck out to me, was the importance of connection and adaptability. In this world, things are constantly evolving. Every day, things become more advanced, there’s more people working towards what you want as well, and more ways people have access to information. Nothing stays the same. How we get our information, how we put information out there, and what people want to see is always changing. You have to be able to roll with the punches, do something different and put in the work to get anywhere. Journalism and media is not what it used to be. And this can be a great thing. We just have to know going into it that you never know what’s coming next. But I also think that’s the beauty in it. I love that we have a world where things are shared and shown in so many different ways. There is something for everyone. And honing in on what makes you you, and using what you specifically can share and bring to the table is so important. Not always what you’re saying, but how you say it. How you tell the story to make it different from anyone else. Connections are also huge. What I loved learning about my pen-pal was all the different things he did prior to being where he is now. He got out of his comfort zone and this allowed him to grow in the best ways. Not being afraid to dive into different areas and learn new things is what is going to set you apart from someone stuck in one lane. Sport communication has so many outlets and aspects to it. This has been one of my favorite courses I have taken throughout my graduate career. I’ve loved the interactions, the overall context of the course and seeing how my own work has progressed and gotten better over the semester. There are so many things that I will keep with me and take into my future career. In life, if you can’t adapt and communicate, you will struggle in a lot of ways. I feel confident I have gained much knowledge in this area within sports that I can take with me that will be of value in whatever future sports endeavor I embark on. Cheers to a wonderful semester, a great professor and knowledge that will stick with me for years to come!
