Student Security Operations Center
Overview
I am currently a member of the Old Dominion University Student Security Operations Center (SOC). This experience gives me the opportunity to learn more about cybersecurity in a hands-on environment while applying concepts from my classes.
My Experience
As a Student SOC member, I am continuing to learn how a Security Operations Center operates and how cybersecurity professionals monitor and respond to security events. I am gaining experience with tools such as CrowdStrike, IBM QRadar, and PagerDuty while learning how they are used to identify and investigate potential security issues.
Since I am still working in the SOC, I am continuing to develop my technical and problem-solving skills. Each shift gives me an opportunity to learn something new and become more comfortable working with cybersecurity tools and processes.
Skills I Am Developing
Through the Student SOC, I am working on developing skills in:
- Security monitoring
- Log and event analysis
- Incident response
- Troubleshooting
- Team communication
- Problem-solving
- Using cybersecurity tools
What I Hope to Gain
My time in the Student SOC is an ongoing learning experience. As I continue working with the team, I hope to build a stronger understanding of security operations and gain more experience handling real-world cybersecurity situations.
I also hope this experience will help me figure out which areas of cybersecurity interest me the most and prepare me for future internships and cybersecurity positions.
