Welcome to my ePortfolio Project. My name is Amgad Binshahbain, and I am a Cybersecurity student at Old Dominion University. This ePortfolio includes my academic work, skills, artifacts, résumé, and reflections that show my growth throughout my degree program. My goal is to use this portfolio to present my cybersecurity knowledge, technical problem-solving skills, and professional communication skills to future employers.

MY PATH TOWARD CYBERSECURITY
My academic journey is slowly being written. My path to becoming interested in the field of cybersecurity was not an overnight change. Over the span of my academic career I became interested in technology as it is everywhere. I studied many technologies to become familiar with how many systems, applications, and networks are used today. As I delved deeper into many of the technologies I realized that there are also many risks involved. Today there are many systems in place that people depend on, such as schools, hospitals, and even governments. These all rely online systems that need to be protected from cyber attacks. I became interested in the field of study that protects these systems from such attacks.
Choosing to major in Cybersecurity as a major at Old Dominion University was a very important decision for me. Cybersecurity as a major, connects technology with real world problems. It is not just about computers and how to fix them. Cybersecurity deals with issues that affect people, information, businesses, and systems of importance. As a result, Cybersecurity is a very meaningful major for me. In addition, it will allow me to apply my technical skills to help people and support organizations.
One of the biggest lessons that I have learned throughout school, personal work, and goals for the future career is that in order to succeed in the field of cybersecurity, a person needs to have a lot of patience and persistence. Not every topic of study will come easily, and some will take a lot of time in order to completely understand. Assignments for school can include many different types of work, for example a project that includes setting up and configuring different systems on a network, or even different parts of information systems, as well as different parts of risk management. For this reason, a person needs to have very good study habits, be able to complete work on time for a deadline, and have the ability and persistence to complete work even when it is difficult to do so. These are all of the qualities and lessons that I have learned while completing different aspects of school, and they are also the qualities that have helped me in so many ways to grow as a person.
As I progress through my knowledge in the field of Cybersecurity, I have come to realize what kinds of skills I will need in my future career as well as in school. There are many technical skills that I will need to understand in order to progress in school as well as in the work force, such as understanding how networks function, learning about the many security concepts, programming, studying about many systems, and studying about risk. But there are also many soft skills that I will need in my future career. For example, as a Cybersecurity professional, there will be many times in which I will have to explain the risks of certain situations as well as how to fix them to people who don’t have a technical background. I will also need to have critical thinking skills because many of the problems in the field of Cybersecurity are not always obvious and can require a lot of in-depth thinking and even asking many questions in order to solve them.
I can now see the connection between my assignments and my career goals. Before this class I thought that my assignments were simply ways for me to receive a grade in a class. However, assignments can now serve as proof of students’ technical skills. The ePortfolio that we created in this course is, “a collection of a student’s work in an electronic format. It can display a student’s progress throughout a course over time” (EPortfolio Definition). This definition has helped me look at my assignments in a different light. Instead of looking at them as completed work that I will never look at again, I can now see how my assignments can be used as evidence of my skills and growing abilities in school.
For the ePortfolio we will be creating, for each of the various projects (whether written up as a report or not) I will include various parts of work from past school (i.e. Old Dominion University) and also from my personal endeavors into the realm of cybersecurity. From the school work, I will include various forms of written work and various projects and group work, whether technical in nature or written reports of school (i.e. class) work and or school (i.e. class) projects. Also, as previously stated, there will be a multitude of written work such as research papers, various school (i.e. class) and or school work (i.e. assignments) written reports, etc. which will be included. Next, for personal work, such as various written reports of personal work, cyber security projects, group work, technical various written reports on projects, etc. will be included. A multitude of school written work such as the school (i.e. class) work, school (i.e. assignments) work, and personal written reports and also written reports of personal work and/or written reports of various projects.
This assignment and personal narrative has also helped me better able to define my Narrative Identity. My Narrative Identity is not just composed of the classes that I have taken or work that I have completed. Rather, it is composed of all of the experiences, good and bad, that I have had throughout my academic career. These have helped to shape who I am today and how I perceive myself. I am still learning and growing. I am still improving. But I am on the right path to becoming a professional in the field of cybersecurity or IT.
Lastly, I want to discuss how students can create a professional ePortfolio when it is presented publicly on the internet. Many professors may be of the notion that having students create a professional ePortfolio is sufficient for hiring in the field of technology today. With the increasing amount of graduating students from schools and universities across the globe, finding a job as a freshly graduated student in technology has become an extremely competitive environment. Professors believe that in addition to presenting a student’s academic skills on a résumé, employers also expect for candidates to show examples of previous work completed in information systems courses as well as other courses that showcase skills and growth throughout a student’s academic career. Many professors have students create professional ePortfolios so that in addition to listing on a résumé skills that a candidate possesses in information systems, there are examples of students’ academic work and skills to give potential employers a better sense of the candidate’s technical abilities and academic growth in information systems.
I also understand that my ePortfolio will be viewed publically, therefore I must be extremely careful at what I include on my ePortfolio, as well as showing professionalism. The work that I include as well as how I present myself, must show confidence however honesty as well. I do not want people to believe that I know everything however I do want to be able to show people that I have made a good start in learning the aspects of Cybersecurity. It is a very changing field and therefore being able to learn the new tools and being able to adapt to them is crucial.
My growth as a student, and individual, throughout my academic journey has allowed me to better focus on my academic and career goals. I am now a more informed individual, of the world of cybersecurity and information technology, and am better able to organize my thoughts, write, and reflect on my experiences throughout my academic career. These skills will enable me to succeed in a variety of roles within fields related to cybersecurity, such as IT support, and analysis of cyber risk.
My future goal is to use my degree and past experiences in school, in order to obtain a stable job in the future, in the IT field, to learn more technical skills, gain more hands-on experience, and become more confident in showing my work, and expressing myself to others professionally through an ePortfolio.
In summary, studying cybersecurity interest, school, personal interests, professional career goals and others have shaped my academic journey. While studying Cybersecurity as a major at Old Dominion University, I learned that a good Cybersecurity professional needs to have not only technical knowledge of information systems, networks and computing, but also good communication skills and be very responsible in his/her actions and in the solutions provided to problems. A good Cybersecurity professional is always learning. This personal narrative has served a purpose and it has helped me to better understand my academic journey as well as my professional identity of a Cybersecurity/IT student. My ePortfolio, therefore, will contain all the projects, etc. that I completed as well as all the skills I learned to show my future employers, the quality of work that I am capable of completing while attending school at Old Dominion University.

Artifact 1: Job Advertisement Analysis
This project shows I get what it takes to succeed in cybersecurity jobs and what skills are needed in the tech industry. I took a close look at a job posting for an NSA Data Scientist and figured out how the requirements fit into areas like cybersecurity, data analysis, programming, communication, and career development. By doing this, I was able to see how all these different pieces connect and what’s expected of someone in this role. It’s not just about having the right technical skills, but also being able to communicate complex ideas and keep learning and growing as a professional.

This artifact represents coursework I completed in cybersecurity classes. It shows my understanding of important cybersecurity concepts, including protecting systems, identifying risks, and learning how security applies to real-world organizations.

This piece showcases my ability to communicate effectively as a professional, as it outlines my path through academia, my objectives for a career in cybersecurity, and my personal growth as a student in this field. It highlights my capacity for introspection, allowing me to link my past experiences with my future aspirations in the cybersecurity industry.

This artifact shows my ability to research a topic, organize information, and communicate ideas clearly in writing. Strong writing is important in cybersecurity because professionals often need to explain risks, findings, and solutions to different audiences.

This artifact demonstrates my ability to communicate ideas in a clear and organized way. It shows my participation in academic discussions and my ability to explain thoughts professionally.
Reflection Essay
Throughout my time as a Cybersecurity degree program student, I have continued to grow in skill in several areas of study including technology, problem solving, academic writing, communication and professional growth. Utilizing my ePortfolio to demonstrate learning throughout my course work in addition to outlining the ways in which school will translate to future work in the fields of Cybersecurity, IT support, cyber risk and other technology oriented jobs, I have highlighted three key skillsets that represent my academic work thus far. These key skillsets include cybersecurity knowledge, technical problem solving, and professional communication.
The first skill that I chose to highlight is cybersecurity knowledge. For a cybersecurity professional, there is nothing more important than having in-depth knowledge of security threats, of information systems and networks, and of the various vulnerabilities that can affect them. Additionally, they must be knowledgeable of the methods by which information is protected, both from external threats as well as from threats which originate from within an organization. In terms of risk management, cybersecurity follows the functions of Govern, Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover. These functions define the full scope of risk management, in the area of cybersecurity as well as in other areas. Many of the courses that I have completed at Old Dominion University, especially in the IDS program, have been designed to teach students about security, both from a technical perspective, as well as from an ethical, legal, and organizational perspective. It is my intent, in order to become a professional in the area of cybersecurity, to have a wealth of knowledge when it comes to security, in order to be able to identify and mitigate risks to information, in a professional and responsible manner.
One of the artifacts to demonstrate knowledge of Cybersecurity is a Job Advertisement Analysis paper. In this assignment, a Job Advertisement for a position of Data Scientist at the NSA was analyzed. The requirements of the job were correlated with requirements for jobs in the area of Cybersecurity, Data Analysis, Programming, Communication and Professional Growth. Although the title of the job was Data Scientist, most of the responsibilities of the position were actually related to work in the area of Cybersecurity because the position involved analyzing complex data to support Intelligence missions. An analysis of the job requirements for the Data Scientist position at the NSA and how the requirements of the position relate to work in the area of Intelligence and Cybersecurity was also completed using information from the NSA’s Career Pages.
The Job Advertisement Analysis of a Data Scientist position at the NSA helped me in understanding the job requirements, the skills needed to fill the position, and the way in which the skills can be applied in intelligence missions. Also, the assignment made me realize that there are many different skills and responsibilities involved in problem solving, therefore I had to list all of them. The analysis of the job advertisement made me a more aware student, as before I used to just read the job title and think that it was sufficient. Now I know that it is very important to study the skills and responsibilities needed in a job to understand how to develop in order to be ready for future careers.
For the knowledge aspect of cybersecurity, I chose to include my coursework. These assignments, in addition to class work, showed my growth in understanding of topics in security, in particular, the security of operating systems. This assignment helped me better understand how different aspects of a program can affect overall security. My knowledge of how to approach problems and complete tasks grew greatly throughout this course.
My third artifact under cybersecurity knowledge is my security and networking assignment. This assignment demonstrated my knowledge of networks and how systems communicate with each other. By learning about how network traffic can be analyzed, I learned how to identify threats and attacks on a system. By completing this assignment, I have become a much better problem solver and I am able to think more logically. This will be very helpful when I am working in IT support, security operations, or even working in cyber risk.
The second skill selected for this ePortfolio is technical problem-solving. This skill will help me solve problems in a professional and efficient manner. These problems in cybersecurity and IT can be to diagnose and troubleshoot problems and issues that arise. Sometimes the cause can be attributed to a system or program error, a network problem, a user error, misconfigured security options, or even an attempt to hack into a system or network. In order to be able to solve these types of problems the professional in this field must have the ability to break down a problem to its basic components, test for different solutions to a problem, use a variety of different tools, applications, and programs, and even document the process of the troubleshooting and resolution of a problem.
My ability to do technical problem-solving will be shown by my Python programming assignment. This assignment shows my ability to do technical problem-solving in several ways. For one, as mentioned before, my ability to do technical problem-solving is shown by the way I think. This way of thinking is also shown in my ability to be very organized and very detailed. My ability to check for errors and to try again after a program has not worked is another way in which my ability to do technical problem-solving is shown. This is also true for the fact that programming helps me to learn how software works. By studying the ways in which programming can be used to find and to take advantage of vulnerabilities in software, and by studying the ways in which programming can be used to write scripts and to automate tasks, I am able to learn how to use programming to find and to take advantage of vulnerabilities in software, and I am able to learn how to use programming to write scripts and to automate tasks.
Lab experience is also very valuable in demonstrating problem solving capabilities. Labs allow a student to practice what they learn about in class. Here I can demonstrate how to troubleshoot a system, how to analyze traffic, and how to configure different systems to meet different requirements. My experience using Windows and Linux operating systems, using Wireshark to analyze traffic, and completing different IT labs where I troubleshoot problems and document what I have done are also relevant to my experience using different systems in order to meet different needs. The ability to apply technical knowledge to solve problems is a very valuable skill for a company to look for in a candidate for IT support jobs.
My risk management assignment for the technical problem-solving skillset shows how I have learned to think of problems in terms of potential threats to an organization, the impact that these could have, and ways in which these could be mitigated. The purpose of a risk management plan is to identify, analyze, and mitigate or avoid risks to an organization to maximize the benefits of an action while minimizing its potential harms. As a result, completing this assignment was an eye-opening experience in terms of how important it is to consider not just the technical side of an issue but also the people, policies, technology, and business goals involved as well. This is part of why the NIST Cybersecurity Framework was created: to help organizations manage their cybersecurity risks.
Professional Communication. Being able to explain issues and details about technical issues in a clear manner. These problems can be explained and presented to managers and/or business personnel as well as other IT support staff. Papers and reports can also be presented and addressed. Various instances where issues have to be addressed can also require documentation. Professional Communication is another skill to understand more as well as how to implement more into career.
The Personal Narrative Essay showed professional communication and helped in writing the Personal Narrative Essay. In the essay, I discussed my interest in technology, problem-solving, and protecting information, which led to my interest in the field of cybersecurity. This helped in connecting my personal growth to my professional identity. The essay showed how I had grown and how I was preparing for my future. This helped in realizing that my academic journey was not just a list of classes that I had completed, but it was also a story of my growth and learning.
My research paper for this course provides excellent evidence for how I have grown as a professional communicator. As a future cybersecurity professional, I have grown in knowledge regarding research. I am able to gather the most relevant information, evaluate credible sources, and organize that information into a clear and coherent academic paper. Furthermore, through my research on this topic, I am able to articulate my arguments with support from evidence. This is critical in cybersecurity, because without evidence and clear reasoning behind recommendations for mitigation or other actions, there is no basis to support security-related decisions that impact not only individuals but organizations.
Lastly, my discussion work for class presentations and IT Security Discussion topics for assigned class readings have helped develop a range of skills including professional communication in academic environments to inform, persuade, or present to others who are in the process of learning and have varying degrees of technical knowledge. IT security requires teamwork of individuals who have a range of skills and are from various backgrounds in order to identify and mitigate problems. So in short, these discussions have helped develop skills of communicating information in professional environments as well as listening, taking note of, and responding to others’ viewpoints, comments, and ideas in written, oral, or combination form.
My ePortfolio reflects my knowledge of how IDS (Interdisciplinary Studies) programs work and the way in which IDS embodies a sense of interdisciplinary learning. That is, IDS programs reflect the idea that when one investigates a field in an IDS-oriented manner, that field is seen to be composed of more than a mere list of techniques and disciplines studied by means of a series of separate and distinct classes, taught in succession by separate professors. My knowledge of IDS thus includes knowledge of how IDS programs reflect a recognition on the part of all involved (including professors, students, and administrators) that true learning is never a wholly separate occurrence from outside work, and that outside work is never wholly separate from true learning. I intend for this to be manifestly apparent in the work that I do for my ePortfolio, with every assignment supported and explained, both individually and as a whole.
IDS courses have played a significant role in my growth as well, by showing me the value of an interdisciplinary approach to learning. I am able to apply knowledge gained from various IDS courses to my work in other classes, helping me to see the bigger picture of learning in general. IDS courses help me develop strong writing skills. My cybersecurity courses allow me to gain further insight into the many risks that exist as well as how I can approach them in a manner that is most responsible. My ethics and law courses help me to examine my actions in the context of how I can be held accountable for them. Lastly, my risk management courses help me evaluate situations to make the best decisions possible.
Another major aspect that I learned from creating this ePortfolio was organization and presentation of my work. It is important that the ePortfolio is clear, organized, professional, and easy to navigate through. As mentioned previously, I created my ePortfolio around 3 major skillsets that the portfolio demonstrates. Writing about my work for this ePortfolio helped me see which skills I have more than enough experience with and which I need more practice with. For example, I am very confident with Technical Problem Solving in terms of the IT Support aspect, but I want to work on gaining more experience and being more confident with writing about the problems and solutions in a technical sense in order to better display my skills. Overall, the ePortfolio has been a great learning experience for me, and I have come to realize even more so that a strong ePortfolio is very important for academics and career.
My ePortfolio is the culmination of all my knowledge and skills that I, as a Cybersecurity student, have acquired throughout my academic sojourn. It highlights my growth in various interdisciplinary areas such as cybersecurity, problem-solving, and professional communication that would aid me in my academic and professional pursuits in the vast realm of technology. These skills are embodied in 9 artifacts that portray my written work in various forms of academic papers, IT and cybersecurity lab experiments, coursework, research on various security threats and their impact, and lastly, personal reflections and self-assessments on various academic exercises and events. The artifacts also showcase various forms of communication such as written reports, research papers, oral presentations and discussions. These various forms of written and oral communication showcase my ability to communicate clearly and professionally with others in an academic setting as well as real world work environments.
