Discussion 11: Workplace Deviance

on

In the modern era we store many different types of data onto computers and servers. These types of data can be sensitive information about people, company secrets, and records that people might want to know to exploit the stock for certain companies. This data can be stored all on one computer so the opportunity to steal this information can be easier for employees to steal and commit white-collar crimes. Some employees may even choose to not steal this information, but to alter it. This can cause major problems for the company because then they may make financial decisions based off of false information. This is also a form of white-collar crime that would be harder to do if all of this data and information was not placed on one computer giving criminals an easier opportunity to commit crimes.

An example of a white-collar crime and a cybercrime overlapping is a employee stealing data about others from their company. An employee who works at a hospital could have access to records on the database that the hospital stores people’s health records on. Then this employee could steal this data and then they could either sell this information on the black market for anyone to buy.

A physical crime makes it more obvious when someone is stealing such as witnesses, the actual object being gone, and  cameras being noticeable. The stealing of digital data however can be seen as an easier task since many can try to make alternate accounts, signing into other employee’s accounts, and other such ways, but there will always be a digital footprint trail that any company or business will be able to track.
