Skill 2: Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Artifact 1: The Role and Responsibilities of a Clinical Lab Assistant: Phlebotomist I at Sentara

Critical thinking and problem solving help me analyze situations, make decisions, and improve outcomes. This skill allows me to approach challenges with logical reasoning and creativity. They also help me make the right decisions in the job business. This artifact demonstrates my ability to analyze a professional position by identifying required skills, qualifications, and company culture. I critically assessed both explicit and implied requirements, connecting them to my personal strengths and career goals. This exercise strengthened my capacity to evaluate professional expectations, problem-solve potential challenges, and reflect on my fit within the healthcare industry.

Artifact 2: Specimen Handling Decision Table

Steps  Action Decision/Criteria   Outcome/Next step
Receive specimen Check label & patient info If correct → Step 2; If missing/incorrect → Verify order or reject
Determine specimen type Identify department (Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Serology) Route to correct tray or storage
Check specimen condition Inspect for damage, clotting, or contamination If OK → Step 4; If problem → Reject & report
Process or store specimen Pour, aliquot, or refrigerate as needed Send to department or store safely
Documentation Record actions in Epic & notify staff if issue arises Complete processing and maintain lab records

Using the experiences from my Job i decided to create this table to demonstrate my critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the clinical lab. Each step requires careful assessment, decision-making, and appropriate action to ensure specimens are handled accurately, safely, and efficiently. By following this structured process, I minimize errors, ensure patient safety, and maintain workflow accuracy.

Artifact 3: Lab Problem-Solving Case Table

Situation  Challenge  Action Taken  Result/Learning
Mislabeled specimen Patient info missing or incomplete Verified the order in Epic and confirmed details with nursing staff Sample processed correctly; error avoided, demonstrating careful attention and problem-solving
Clotted blood sample Sample unusable for testing   Re-collected specimen following proper phlebotomy procedure and documented issue Ensured accurate test results; learned to quickly identify and correct procedural issues
Multiple urgent specimens   Limited time and staff during night shift Prioritized specimens based on test urgency and processed systematically All specimens handled efficiently without errors; improved time management and workflow strategies

This table highlights real-world scenarios in which I applied critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the clinical lab. Each situation required assessing the problem, taking appropriate actions, and learning from the outcome to improve workflow and ensure accurate results. These examples show my ability to think quickly, make decisions, and solve challenges while maintaining patient safety and lab efficiency.
