Write Up: Hacking Humans

Human beings have been plagued with disease and disability. Thankfully, in recent years, technology has gotten to the point where we not only get a chance to see what can cause these diseases, but we can see how they affect our DNA and how we can prevent and treat them. The systems and software that are utilized for these DNA and disease studies are extremely important to science and how we come up with certain vaccines and medications. With cybersecurity attack vectors and methods evolving on a daily basis, it is extremely important that we find ways to secure and protect this information. The thought that someone could have their digital DNA stolen and sold off on the dark web, or have their personal information held for ransom and have to pay to get their information back with no guarantee that it won’t show up somewhere else, is concerning. We, as professionals, need to ensure we can keep people and their information safe and out of the hands of those who would take their personal information and use it against them. Cyber biosecurity is a field that will very soon affect every last person, with the way things are getting more and more digital, especially in hospitals and private practices. Doctors are now at the point where very few offices actually write things down; now, things are usually entered into a system that houses all of that person’s information in one place, so securing this information and that system needs to be a number one priority.
