IDS 493 – Electronic Portfolio Project
The IDS 493 course focused on building and developing a professional electronic portfolio. The goal of the course was to help students organize their academic work and reflect on the skills they have developed throughout their degree programs. Instead of simply collecting assignments, the course encouraged students to think about how their coursework connects to their career goals and future opportunities.
During the course we learned what an ePortfolio is and why it is valuable for both students and professionals. An ePortfolio is more than just a place to store assignments. It is a way to show growth, highlight important work, and demonstrate the skills that have been developed through education and experience.
One of the first steps in the course was collecting artifacts from different classes. Artifacts are examples of work such as projects, assignments, or other materials that show what a student has learned. Gathering these pieces helped me review my past coursework and identify work that best represented my progress and abilities.
Another important part of the course focused on aligning academic work with career goals. We explored job postings and industry expectations to better understand the skills employers are looking for. This helped me think about how my coursework and experience support my goal of building a career in cybersecurity and information technology.
The course also emphasized reflection. Instead of only showing completed assignments, we were encouraged to think about what we learned from each experience. Reflecting on projects helped me understand how my technical skills, problem solving abilities, and professional knowledge have grown over time.
Another part of the class focused on improving professional materials such as resumes and organizing work in a way that is clear and easy for others to understand. We also reviewed best practices for creating effective portfolio content and designing a professional website.
Overall this course helped me step back and look at my academic journey as a whole. Building this portfolio allowed me to organize my work, highlight the skills I have developed, and better understand how my education connects to my career goals in cybersecurity.
