System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems play a vital role in protecting critical infrastructure safe from cyber attacks. They help control important functions of a society by offering real-time monitoring and give human operators access to controls remotely. While SCADA systems offer their own set of drawbacks, keeping them safe and running is a priority.
What Is SCADA
SCADA is a system of hardware and software used to monitor real-time events in industrial processes, facility-based processes, or infrastructure control processes. Subsystems present in a SCADA system usually include a human operator, supervisory team, Remote terminal units (RTU), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and communication infrastructure (SCADA Systems).
Common Vulnerabilities in Critical Infrastructure
Critical infrastructure is a common target for cyber threats. The vulnerabilities include legacy systems, insider threats, supply chain attacks, and remote access threats (The Security Company (International) Limited, 2023). Legacy systems are systems that are out dated and hard to upgrade. They become prime targets for cyber attacks. Insider threats are employees within an organization that have access to sensitive information and controls that are causing damage, whether they know it or not. Hackers can damage equipment in the supply chain. Cyber attacks can target processes that are controlled remotely without having to be onsite.
SCADA Applications to Mitigate Risk
SCADA systems can prevent damage from cyber attacks with multiple methods. A few key best practices include separating SCADA networks from IT networks through network segmentation. Organizations can harden their endpoints by disabling unnecessary services and keeping systems updated as well as continuously monitoring for suspicious activity. Enforcing strong access controls like MFA, conducting regular penetration tests, and training employees about common threats(Sundar, 2025). When protections are layered, it makes it that much more difficult for hackers to cause damage.
Conclusion
In conclusion, SCADA systems help protect our critical infrastructure from failing. It is essential to invest resources into protecting the SCADA systems themselves, so that essential services like clean water are available.
