The online experience and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs have a resounding correlation. The bottom tier, being physiological needs, is fulfilled by access to the internet via a device and a stable connection. Online security fulfills the safety tier. Things like having a secure account and practicing safe behaviors keep unwanted attackers from accessing personal accounts and information. Without this, it can be very difficult to do anything online. The next tier, belonging, comes from various online communities and places to socialize. I fulfill this tier by talking/messaging online friends who may not be able to socialize in person due to distance. Without communities or services to socialize, the internet as a whole would feel lonely. The next tier, esteem, can be fulfilled via social media. Getting recognition and praise from social media comments and likes can boost a user’s esteem and make them feel like they have a reputation. Lastly, self-actualization can be fulfilled by making creative content for personal experience and improvement. There are some content creators online who have fulfilled this tier, and the most prominent I can think of is a YouTuber who goes by Kane Pixels. Most of his work is passion projects that are mainly for his own personal gratification and development as an amateur film producer.
