The first weeks of college are a huge transition for incoming freshman, and during this period, effective guidance can provide immense support to students. It is with this thought that in the first weeks of school, the students are introduced to an adviser through a large orientation class, where they will be required to sign up for two advising appointments throughout the semester. It is my opinion that this close contact with a student and adviser will promote a relationship where the student can gain the largest benefit possible. Through my previous experience with advising, I learned that the more relateable the adviser, the more the student tends to gain from meetings. This can easily be developed through multiple channels of communication. Ultimately, it is the goal of the adviser to facilitate the growth of the student while letting them drive their own path, but giving advice that will aid them in forging their own path.
