Often, a common interview question is “where do you see yourself in five years?” and many people do not have a truly solid plan for what they want, and how they will go about achieving it. It is hard to think about where you want to be in five years, especially as a young professional, where often, five years felt like a lifetime. Sometimes, taking the first step is what can really make a difference, and I feel that I have done that by presenting at an international conference where so many ideas are shared and immense knowledge is gained. From this experience, I have opened my eyes to creating a five year plan. Immediately, I aim to complete my first research investigation when I return, so that I can have data to present at two major conferences in back to back years. I am currently set to present at the Society for Neuroscience in November 2017, and I aim to present my current work at the World Biomechanics Conference in August 2018, as well as International Society of Biomechanics Congress in 2019. I have been given an immense passion to carry out my research through attending this conference, and I feel that it has set my path for the next two years. For the following years, I want to continue the research I am currently working with and develop it further and conduct follow up studies where I can present those findings at following conferences. I aim to complete my dissertation with the completion of these studies, and attain a faculty position where I advise PhD students as well as master’s students to further their goals of conducting research. Additionally, a key component of my plan is to write successful grants that facilitate funding for my studies, as well as allow my participants to earn a reward, as well as payment of my assistants. Grant funding is a huge topic, especially in sport science, where there is not much money to be had, so the ability to write a grant and earn money is incredibly important to me. It is my aim to have a grant by the time I present at ISB in 2019. I do want a break after I complete my PhD and I am happy to take a one or two year contracted teaching position where my research is at a small level, where after that I can look into a tenure track position in 2022, completing my immediate five year plan.
