The Impact of Using A.I Tools On Your Career Path
For project one, the task I selected will be formulating lesson and program plans as the Recreation Program Leader for Portsmouth Parks and Recreation. According to the Portsmouth Parks and Recreation job description, I will be required to”Assists with planning, developing, and conducting recreational activities for 20 to 100 children to include daily activities, trips, special events, and classes; assists with monitoring facilities, rentals, and activities to maintain structure, safety, and a clean environment; prepares required documentation as necessary; sets up and breaks down equipment for various events and activities”. I also will have to “Prepare instructional objectives and lesson plans; instructs individuals and groups in specified activities and programs; implements safe practices”. I wanted to use this task because hopefully by the end of the year this will be the new position I will accept. It also will give me great insight into how I would conduct day to day operations versus how A.I would conduct the same tasks.
The A.I I will be using is ChatGPT. The first prompt it was given was to “ Help me create a weekly plan for parks and Rec Youth kids. Once given this prompt it asked for the following information: Age Group, Number of Kids, Time of Attendance” Do I want them based plans like “Nature week” or “Teamwork Week”, and Specific Activity Goals: On a base level ChatGPT gave me a great baseline to work with providing me with a lot of great ideas. Once I input the information it requested, it gave me a sample-weekly plan with a themed based structure which included: a theme related focused activity, a mix of recreation, crafts, games, and quiet time. It then gave me a full hour by hour schedule for each day with all of the information provided by the prompts. This was my first time ever using A.I for something rather intricate and I was thoroughly impressed with the results given to me. ChatGPT was able to complete a submittable schedule for the department in about five minutes of work. The only thing I needed to do was manually change the words so they fit in the description box which would be an easy fix within Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Before I asked ChatGPT to create a schedule I made my own so I could evaluate the difference in the time it took to complete and the details within the schedule and lesson plans.
For my own schedule I broke out the pencil and paper and first made a list of the activities I wanted to include. Once I did this, I broke down what I wanted to do for each hour from the time they arrive until it’s time for parent/guardian or bus pickup. I set a timer before I began my process and by the end of completion it was almost an hour of picking through activities and themes. After using my own schedule and the schedule ChatGPT made, there were a lot of similarities between the two. A.I was able to complete a near replica of my own in a fraction of the time which is very helpful for efficiency. In my future line of work I would implement A.I like ChatGPT and others into my work. A great cohesion of my own mind and A.I would boost productivity, explore new ideas, and unlock future potential with integrating technology into school and recreational programs. Personally I love the use of artificial intelligence as an aid to my own work. However with the Use of A.I comes integrity questions and uncertainty of teacher and staff creditability
The question of how should parents and students consider the credibility of a teacher who uses A.I technology all depends on how the teacher or leader implements the software into a curriculum. In my personal future use, I plan to use it as an aid instead of a direct source to output information. A great example of this would be the schedule I made for my earlier comparison between myself and ChatGPT. I put a lot of thought and effort into making my own and there are things that I included that ChatGPT did not. On the flip side, ChatGPT gave me other options I didn’t consider and made a baseline format for me to edit and change if need be. The combinations of both formats, ideas, and inputs will collectively give a better result than one or the other independently in my own opinion. When asking for a lesson plan or schedule beneficial to recipients created by A.I, I believe you must take into account the prompts given by the user. For example I told Chat GPT to make a lesson plan for elementary school kids and it gave me a basic layout. This in itself would be completely unacceptable to give to elementary school kids due to the lack of depth and substance in the prompt. Furthermore I believe that even if you filled the software with necessary data and facts to create a schedule it still wouldn’t be supplementary or satisfactory. The reason being it lacks emotional depth and a complete human sentient understanding. It is only through a combination of both parties A.I can be acceptable for children to consume.
Since I am a senior in college A.I was not a software available for everyone to use like it is now and surely not as developed. I did some research as to how to deal with ethos and pathos analysis as a parent and found that there are a plethora of resources like SchoolAI, The Stanford Report, and others varying from blogs to collegiate scholarly sources that aid in understanding proper use of A.I. One thing I learned is that online programs like Kahoot, Khan Academy, and Duolingo use A.I to help students learn foreign languages, math, and writing concepts through conversational chat interfaces(Itoi) These features have been in use for a while and you wouldn’t even think A.I is being used. The reason I believe A.I has a fearweather reputation in terms of teacher’s educational use is due to ChatGPT, the program I used for my comparison analysis. ChatGPT is an A.I tool that can give you a response or answer to almost anything you ask it. It would be easy to understand why a parent would be uncomfortable with teachers using this to create lesson plans because there is no real way to tell if the teacher or professor used A.I independently or cohesively with their own mind. To aid this concern I believe that teachers, professors, and anyone that intends to use A.I to assist with any type of educational development should be certified with an A.I Certification for educators. Colleges like Harvard, Georgia Tech, and EdTechTeacher offer certification courses that teach and instruct all the ways A.I should be properly used.
My task seems simple at the surface level. I wanted to create a schedule for me to use as the recreational activity leader of Portsmouth Parks and Recreation. After making my own schedule and prompting ChatGPT to do the same, there weren’t many differences outside of the formatting error which could be due to me not having ChatGPT Pro, but they are indeed distinguishable. There would be a major consequence to solely using A.I to submit the schedule after conducting the necessary research and experimentation. In my summary of the reading “Why A.I isn’t Going to Make Art” I quoted Chiang saying “Art is something that results from a lot of choices”. Something similar can be found here. Although making a schedule isn’t something considered “Art”, it definitely is something that results from making a lot of choices. The more detailed and thoughtful the schedule, the more effective the results when the details are implemented. This is something ChatGPT was not able to do on its own without human intervention.
Given all of the previous elements discussed, I deem A.I beneficial to those who interact with the product. If I am accepted into the position of Recreational Activity Leader, I will be using Artificial Intelligence along with my own Intelligence and knowledge. I believe that the combination of both will allow me to succeed and further develop in my future career path. Chiang is quoted saying “ generative A.I has been most successful at lowering our expectations” When solely using A.I as the end all be all, I would agree with this assessment. However, after discovering the endless possibilities when you combine human thinking and Artificial Intelligence, I would disagree with his quote and say that it has heightened my expectations. I believe that I am able to do great work on my own but after using A.I to assist me, I believe that I will excel further than I would have without it. This In-turn will boost the value of my product and present the best platform for the children under my watch to succeed at the highest level possible.
