 Summer Internship Program research project

Over the summer, I was granted the opportunity to work as an intern at the Army Cyber Institute at the United States Military Academy, New York (USMA). Here I worked with a small team on a research project called Narrative Networks. Implementing the use of data science through a coding platform called python, we were able to congregate data from different news sources within adversarial countries such as Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran. Throughout the analysis of our data, our objective was to see what the rhetoric was like within different news sources in each country. However, the problem occurred with our data itself. It was difficult to read and understand. To alleviate this problem, we implemented a new way to review the data that would be understandable for us, and most importantly, for the people who were not experts in this field. We did so by gathering keywords seen within our data and correlating them with a global conflict within that specific decade. For example, if we were looking at data regarding Russia, we would find a prevalent topic within our data, look up what decade that topic was most prevalent in, and from there we were able to see how Russian news sources talked about that specific topic. By coming up with this solution, we were able to properly relay the information we had to key personal in a way that was clear and concise.
