BLOG #10 ~

I feel as though I have achieved the course objectives pretty well. What I wrote in the first blog entry sums up a lot of what I have ended up taking from this course. My attitudes about social psychology have changed during the course because I have learned more than I expected to learn, and got to practice on an e portfolio that will help me achieve my major with even more knowledge going into the career that interests me, social media marketing. If I could take this course again, I would write down more vocab to learn even more about the material. Also, I would create a virtual study group with some classmates to get other opinions on the material.

I have grown academically over the last few months because I have expanded my knowledge in not only this course, but three others as well that all tie together. Also, I have challenged myself with taking multiple courses at once online, which online is all new to me this year. One skill I have gained from this course that I can use in my profession would have to be that I have a clearer understanding on people in general, and how they interact than I did before taking the course. This will help me a lot due to both of my jobs I work right now being customer service based, and my career being focused on reaching out to people via media.

I chose this visual to represent my academic growth throughout the course. These learning objectives give a great visual example, and represent this perfectly.

So far in this course I have learned a variety of things. There are three that come to mind in thinking about what I’ve learned. The first thing is that there are many ads that degrade, or are disrespectful towards woman. I didn’t realize this occurred as much as it does. When I learned about how often this occurs it opened my eyes to other ads I see in day to day life. The second thing I learned was that men and women upset each other in different ways. Men and woman have differences in their thoughts and emotions and express them in different ways. This can upset the opposite gender without even realizing. The third thing I learned is about sources being credible vs non credible. A credible source is more trustworthy and more likely to be true. On the other hand, a non credible source may be false, incorrect, and come from someone with not enough knowledge on the topic. Almost as if it was made up in some circumstances.

My blog post #4 relates directly to my success in the course and all of the assignment I have done because its about test taking strategies and success in the course overall. I have also learned this in other courses. It is important to be educated on good ways to be successful in all courses that you take to help ensure a good outcome.

The similarities of how men upset women and how woman upset men is that Each gender may lie prior to consummation. Each gender may lie about their feelings in order to be able to have sexual relations with the other. They do this in hopes of making the other person think they are more emotionally involved than what they really are, so that they can get them in bed. Men do this more than women; however, both genders do it. The differences are that women are more emotional and this may upset, or get on a mans nerves after a while if they don’t know how to deal with those emotions. Also, because men are a lot of times more nonchalant about things and woman tend to want the man to show he cares more. This will definitely upset any woman.

Evolutionary psychology can help explain these differences by the way things have happened over time. Over time, if these things are frequently happening, or if they are common, it will become sort of like a social norm where men/woman expect, or look out for these certain behaviors before they even occur. This can cause conflict in the sexual relationship because of assumptions. The differences in how men and woman upset each other could also cause conflict because if a man is too nonchalant, the woman will think he is using her. Also, if the woman is too emotional, it can come off as clingy, or may ruin the moment.

The relationship between self regulation and emotional intelligence is that if you had a lot of emotional intelligence, then you would be a very good self regulator. The first step in emotional intelligence is self awareness. What we feel affects how we think. According to the video, you should pay attention to what you’re feeling and what your emotions are, so that you can self regulate those emotions. To me self regulation means as the video states, ” choose how you want to respond”. Also that you should de-escalate fight or flight emotions, so that your response can be more wise, and make more sense. Techniques to de-escalate would be to breath deeply to calm your mind and emotions.

My reaction to this ted talk is that I agree with a lot of what the speaker is saying about the ads. I believe that many ads do distort, stereotype, and dehumanize woman. Before seeing this ted talk, I would notice some feminist ads here and there, but I guess I never really paid full attention to how exactly things are being advertised. Now that I have watched this ted talk, it makes me realize how many ads I’ve seen that are feminist towards woman. This video contributed to a new understanding of differential gender representation by showing how the world views woman compared to men. Some of the ads she showed were men on the front speaking of woman, or making puns about them, or how they are. I don’t find this okay. I believe that woman are created equal to men, not below them. The world views woman as house keepers, emotional, etc. Instead the world should view woman as a normal human being that is equal to a man.

This first photo is relevant to the ted talk because it is questioning the phrase “like a girl.” What does like a girl mean? Making this statement is rude considering every person is different. Also, not all woman act the same.

The photo above relates to the ted talk because it is an add that everyone would assume would be for woman. Why is this add assumed to only be for woman? Is it because of the makeup? Any person can wear makeup. It doesn’t matter what gender you are. This ad is making a point that whether you are a male or a female, you can wear makeup and it will be okay.

The photo above is an ad that relates to the ted talk because it is a woman showing her muscles saying she can do it. What this ad is really saying is that woman can do it too. For as long as we can remember, woman have a harder time getting certain jobs that men usually do. Although laws have been passed that make that not okay, still to this day we see that type of behavior towards woman.

This ad relates to the ted talk because it is very rude towards woman and is falsely assuming a woman’s role. This ad makes it seem like woman are better naked, or with less clothes. Its almost as if it is saying “i like you better as a stripper”.

I personally really like this add, and it also relates to the ted talk because it is making the point that not all woman have your standard Barbie doll body. Not every woman has the body of a swimsuit model, or whatever society says is beautiful. Its making the point that all woman have a different shape, and all are beautiful in their own way.

The image above represents a credible source because it is posted by a very well known brand. Also, because it tells you all of the nutritional facts that deals with the drink being advertised. It also has an ex NBA legend on the front to help the selling. Kobe Bryant being in the NBA makes sense for him to be on the front of the advertisement because vitamin water is a good drink for athlete because of what is in it. This brand does seem to know what they are talking about, and they seem to be an expert on the product. This makes it a credible source.

The picture above represents a Non Credible Source because firstly, it is a selfie taken with the product, that then was published on Instagram. With that being said, there are ads like this, but not with Kylie Jenner holding a bag of Fit Tea when she probably doesn’t even use the product. Also, Kylie Jenner is not a health expert, nor does she know a lot about tea. People will be mistaken looking at this ad because they probably think that if they buy the Fit Tea that they will look like Kylie Jenner, or at least have a body like hers. This is not credible either because Kylie didn’t get her body like that by drinking tea, she got work done on her body via plastic surgery. That is why this is NOT a Credible Source.

The picture above represents an Attractive Source because the woman on the front is Jennifer Aniston, and she is beautiful. It seems as though she doesn’t ever age, so Smart Water made a good decision by putting her on the front. People who are more attractive are more persuasive. In the picture, she looks really pretty and has her hair done. That is why this is an Attractive Source.

By writing down my incorrect answers from the last test and finding the correct answer, this helped me spend more time to understand the question. I learned that it is sort of like studying in a way because you are finding out why the answer was incorrect and why the right answer is correct. As I read through to find the right answer, I would summarize the paragraphs so that I could read that instead of rereading all of the information over again. The week prior to the test, I looked over the review sheet and looked up some of the things that would be on the test, so that I would know what I’m in for. This feedback helped my test taking strategy on future tests because in the future I will review each answer more thoroughly to see if I can understand more, I will review the future incorrect answers, and I will find out how I got future answers wrong, so that I wont make the same mistake again.

The connection between music and relationships to me is formed. For me, it takes experiences to feel a connection to a song. For example, if I go to the beach with a friend and we play a song on the speaker, I may think back on that time at the beach when I hear that song. Also, when people go through a breakup, they are more likely to listen to a song about a breakup because those are the feelings that they feel at the time, and the song relates to those feelings. I have noticed a similarity when it comes to me and my best friends music preference especially at this moment in time. This is due to us both recently going through a breakup after a long term relationship. With this being said, me and my friend have both been listening to music that boosts our self esteem after a breakup. Me and my friend share similar values not only with each other going through the same experience, but also with the songs that we listen to. The song “My Main” by Mila J reminds me of my bestfriend Sydney because out of all my friends, she is my number one, and truly my main friend. Also, because that song is about a friendship. The song “Miss Independent” by Ne Yo represents how I strive to be in life. Stress free, handling my business, while being a beautiful and strong woman. The song “Humble and Kind” by Tim McGraw reminds me of my family. This is because the song mentions a lot of things my family taught me growing up. The song “India” by Lil Durk reminds me of my relationship with my ex boyfriend when there were no issues in our relationship, and also because that was him and I’s song for each other. The song “BS” by Jhene Aiko reminds me of my friend Kristen because that is a song that I had her listen to, due to her going through a breakup like me. The song is all about getting back on your a game and leaving the past behind you. Last but not least, the song “Promises” by Jhene Aiko reminds me of my nieces and nephews. I always think of this song when they are around because the song is about seeing someone grow up and promising to always be there for them, and to me there is a direct connection between that song and them.

The type of student that I perceive myself to be is a overall good student. I am efficient with my work. I am organized and on time with turning things in. I have great communication especially if I have a question about one of the assignments. I work well with classmates. I accept feedback positively when it comes to constructive criticism. I retain the information that I learn, so that I can use it for the rest of my life and for my career. Lastly, I am goal oriented. I have big plans for myself that I plan to use my degree on.

My current level of confidence as a student is very high but could be a lot higher. I believe in myself but sometimes when things get hard I can get overwhelmed. I can also get frustrated at the amount of work that is in front of me at times with all of my classes. I am still confident though due to the fact that I believe in can achieve anything I out my mind to. I take school very seriously and i keep my head up by knowing that it will all pay off in the long run. Things that increase my confidence in school are my planner so that I can plan out my whole semester and turn in things on time. Also when I receive good feedback and scores from my professors. With this I know that I am on the right track and doing well.

On the self efficiency quiz, I received a 34. or a 3.4. this is good knowing that the highest score is a 40, or a 4.0. My self efficiency results in relation to my task accomplishments relate to one another by the way that I stay on top of things. My results were good, and I accomplish things routinely and on point. My results being high shows that I am very diligent and can stay on tack and in order with my tasks. I complete tasks very thoroughly and make sure they are done right.

The course subjects outlined in the syllabus will assist me in the future because they will all help shape my views in life. Also they will assist me when it comes to dealing with other people and not having pre judgement of them. It will also keep my mind open to new ideas. My expectations of this course (Social Psychology) are to learn more about others behaviors, to learn what they are derived from, and to learn how to deal with them. I am hoping to gain better insight when it comes to social perception and social life in general. The strategies that I will implement to ensure success in this course will be to take notes of all of the modules, use my planner to write down all of the due dates to stay on top of them, and to keep an open mind to learn about all of the topics and gain more knowledge on them that I will retain.

Representative visual image ~ I chose this image because it represents social cognition, or how us as individuals perceive other people and social life. This covers a large portion of the first couple chapters and I felt as though it would be a good picture to relate to this course.
