Introduction
I am finishing my degree in cybersecurity, and I want to work in network security. During my program, I learned many useful skills that will help me in my career. The three skills I chose to focus on are problem solving, network analysis, and communication. These skills are important because cybersecurity jobs require people to fix problems, understand how networks work, and explain technical information clearly. I developed these skills through labs, projects, and assignments in my classes. Each of these experiences helped me improve and prepare for real situations.
Problem Solving
Problem solving is one of the most important skills in cybersecurity. In many situations, you need to find out what is wrong and fix it quickly. This could involve network issues, security problems, or system errors.
One example of this skill is a networking lab where I had to connect two different networks using routers. At first, the devices could not communicate with each other. I had to figure out what was causing the problem. I checked the IP addresses, subnet masks, and routing settings. After testing different options, I fixed the issue by adding the correct static routes. This showed me how important it is to stay patient and test different solutions.
Another example is a cybersecurity case analysis where I looked at cyberwarfare actions and decided if they were ethical. I had to break down the situation, understand the problem, and explain my reasoning. This required critical thinking and careful analysis.
I also completed troubleshooting labs where I had to find and fix network errors. In these labs, I tested connections, checked configurations, and corrected mistakes. These activities helped me become more confident in solving technical problems.
This skill is important in a job because cybersecurity professionals need to respond to problems quickly and find solutions. Strong problem solving skills help keep systems secure and running properly.
Network Analysis
Network analysis is the ability to understand how a network works and examine it for problems or risks. This is very important in cybersecurity because networks must be monitored and protected.
One example of this skill is a project where I studied how data moves through a network. I learned how devices send and receive information and how packets travel between systems. This helped me understand how networks function. Another example is a subnetting and routing project. In this assignment, I designed a network with two subnets and used routers to connect them. I assigned IP addresses and made sure the devices could communicate. I also created routing tables so each network knew how to reach the other.
I also learned about wireless networks and security. I studied how different security protocols protect data and how attacks can happen on wireless systems. This helped me understand how to secure networks. Experiences like this helped me build a strong understanding of networks. In a job, this skill is useful for monitoring systems, finding problems, and preventing security threats.
Communication
Communication is the ability to explain technical information clearly. This is important because cybersecurity professionals must share their findings with others.
An example I got is a case analysis paper where I explained cyberwarfare concepts. I had to clearly describe the situation and support my ideas with reasons. This helped me practice writing in a clear and organized way. Another example is writing reports for networking projects. In these reports, I explained how I set up the network and how I fixed problems. I had to describe each step so someone else could understand what I did.
I also completed lab reports where I explained how I solved technical problems. This required me to organize my thoughts and explain them simply. These experiences improved my communication skills. In a job, this skill is important when working with a team or explaining technical issues to others.
