Please note: This site is currently under construction. As of Summer 2025, the directory is being reset to include only agencies with an active or pending Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on file with Old Dominion University. Please be patient as site information is verified and added.
This directory serves as a hub for human services internship sites with established or in-progress MOUs. While it’s a great starting point for exploring opportunities, students are not limited to these listings. If you’re interested in a site that is not included here, you will need to work with the agency to initiate the MOU process, as outlined in the Internship Handbook.
Expanding your search
You’re encouraged to explore internship opportunities beyond this directory. Many nonprofits and human service agencies offer valuable experiences, so search for those in your geographical area.
Common types of sites include:
- Homeless shelters and food banks
- Addiction treatment and mental health centers
- Domestic violence shelters and crisis hotlines
- Agencies serving at-risk youth or individuals with intellectual disabilities
- Family service centers (e.g., adoption, custody, parenting support)
- Mediation and prevention programs (e.g., bullying, HIV/STI, suicide)
- Geriatric service centers and hospital-based programs
- School-based HMSV programs (non-academic focus)
- Organizations serving military families or LGBTQ+ populations
- Nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity or ForKids
You can also explore opportunities through ODU’s Monarch Internship & Co-Op Office, which maintains a database of contacts and hosts workshops and events. Finally, be sure you’re signed up for email alerts from the HMSV Internship Organization in Canvas, where specific opportunities are posted as they come in from our Community Partners.
