The one thing this year that not only was the most interesting to me, but I also felt had the most connection to the field I intend to pursue is the use of HeLa cells. My goal is to be in the study of radiology, whether if it’s anatomical or therapeutic. Since HeLa cells are “immortal” and are used in the testing of cancerous cell lines, therapeutic radiology won’t only study them, but also apply them to patients with cancer. I did not have prior knowledge of HeLa cell before attending my Cell Biology classes and not only did I see how it could be applied to my field of work practices, but also ethically. How these cells were archived was completely unethical, even though the results helped better the world. Going down this field I must understand that even though it is a serious field and greatly impacts the world, I should still respect all aspects of my patients and not do something without their knowledge.
