The Laissez-faire economic theory explains that the government should not interfere with the economy, except to protect individuals inalienable rights. Some would argue that privacy is an inalienable right. The fact that the customers privacy was breached calls for government intervention, due to potential stolen data, and the risk of identity theft. The Marxian economic theory is also reflected in the breach, and was confirmed by the letter, in a sense. The Marxian theory explains that those in power exploit those without power. The power in this case could be technical skill, or maybe the customer couldn’t afford proper cybersecurity measures and was exploited because of it, due to their increased vulnerability. Cognitive Theories could have also played a role in why the cybercriminal decided to exploit the victim, maybe they needed money or wanted to prove their worth to someone of a higher skill level. Reinforcement sensitivity theory also relates to the incident described in the breach notification. There was most likely a quick reward for the cybercriminal, whether it affected the victim who received the notification directly or not.
