Review the articles linked with each individual motive. Rank the motives from 1 to 7 as the motives that you think make the most sense (being 1) to the least sense (being 7). Explain why you rank each motive the way you rank it.
- Money – https://threatresearch.ext.hp.com/sex-drugs-and-toilet-rolls-how-cybercriminals-spend-their-money-infographic/
To me, this is on the same level as revenge. If we look at it in the aspect of a hacker or corporation stealing for a working person they might want to get revenge. This is why I think that money is number one in making the most sense.
- Revenge – https://newsfromwales.co.uk/news/revenge-porn-victims-in-wales-often-feel-let-down-by-the-law-as-cybercrime-slips-through-the-net/
I think this makes the second most sense as to why someone might want to commit a crime. If someone has felt wronged they might want to take revenge on that person in order to make them feel like they did. This article gives many examples of why someone might want revenge.
- Political – https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/panache/new-generation-of-angry-youthful-hackers-join-the-hacktivism-wave-adding-to-cyber-security-woes/articleshow/81707844.cms
In this case, I placed the hacktivist in the third spot for the reason that they could be trying to expose the competitor or to show support for their political party.
- Multiple reasons – https://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/news/what-drives-hackers-to-a-life-of/?__cf_chl_jschl_tk__=pmd_c1d89a4695edbd23f2bceb54d70f35ce5e536e86-1626721164-0-gqNtZGzNAfijcnBszQi6
I was going to place this as number one but then I thought about it and decided that it would be better to leave it as the last motive that makes sense. There may be more than one reason behind this motive, but I believe there is one thing that needs to happen for it to escalate and become a multiple-reason motive. Since one thing can happen without the other.
- Boredom- https://www.heraldlive.co.za/news/2021-05-31-cyberbullying-and-online-sexual-grooming-of-children-on-the-increase/
People do crazy things when they are bored for example this article says how young children tend to go online and chat with strangers because they are bored. This is a serious issue, parents need to know what their children and doing since it can bring them to harm.
- Recognition – https://www.theregister.com/2021/06/30/bradley_niblock_election_ddos/
Most serial killers and hackers tend to use crime as a way to show their skill since they are looking to be either feared or show how skillful they are to look for approval. They might feel like they don’t fit in the world so they do something crazy to look for something of acknowledgment.
- Entertainment – https://9to5mac.com/2021/07/19/man-behind-linkedin-scraping/
I placed entertainment in last place, just because I placed it at the bottom doesn’t mean that it isn’t important. Entertainment isn’t intended to physically harm anyone, at least not specifically. I just think there isn’t a particular motive or intention behind it.
