  1. Verbeek argues that, because technology is becoming more and more embedded in our lives, its effects can no longer be left to governments alone. The technologies we are currently developing influence how people communicate with each other, how they make decisions and how they experience the world. Businesses should take responsibility for the social consequences of the products they design. Them being only focused on innovation is no longer acceptable. Companies should take the social implications into account from the start. Governments are responsible for establishing and enforcing laws on privacy and security but also these rules need to be adjustable to new technologies. Companies and industry organizations can play a major role by establishing ethical standards. But also users have to be aware of the technologies they are using and of the information they are sharing with others. In a networked society, effective regulation requires cooperation of governments, companies and users. Only then can technological progress be beneficial to society as a whole.

  1. One of the key takeaways that I got from Jonas reading is that we will always only have a partial view into the future. This means that technology advances at a higher rate than we can understand the long term consequences of it. In the past people were only responsible for decisions that directly affected them. The impact was much smaller. Today, due to the enormous scale of technology improvement, our responsibilities have expanded. Now decisions affect millions of people, future generations, and the environment. In my opinion, because of the “Short Arm” of predictive knowledge, cyber-policy and infrastructures should be build with caution, and not pushed forward blindly without putting it into the consideration that there could be unknown and dangerous consequences. There should still be room to promote innovation but the adoption of every new infrastructure should be conditioned to regular security reviews, risk assessments, and monitoring new threats. An ideal solution for the organizations adopting new technologies is to predict any possible risks even if they are not identifiable yet, so they are always ready for the potential bad occurrences. Jonas states that we can’t predict every future consequence and recognizing it is a part of being responsible. Because of this, policymakers should try to create flexible policies regarding cybersecurity, that can change as technology continues to advance. Especially with AI developing very quickly and creating new risks that didn’t exist when it was first introduced. We will never be able to predict every outcome but we still are responsible to reduce those risks and think about how our today’s decisions will affect the next generations.

  1. The unique characteristics of cyberspace undermine traditional police investigations significantly. Criminals can conceal their true identities by using anonymous accounts, encryption and conduct their crimes across state and international, making them hard to locate, seize evidence against, and bring before trial. One of the crimes now proving challenging in its internet form is piracy. In the past it took physical media to pirate films and music, while now anyone can share films and music instantly and makes it almost impossible to trace. One issue is that the technology connection to the criminal justice system continues to develop far quicker than academics. It takes years for research and course development in the criminal justice curriculum. However these can all happen within seconds or minutes on the cyber criminals who seek to exploit any newly created technology or mechanism of communication. The current criminal justice curriculum traditionally relates physical criminal activity, but we don’t usually have our criminologists with information on computer security concepts. A course entitled Insider Threat may one day fill the void because this subject matters area combines social science knowledge like motivation, human behavior, cultural factors and other STEM knowledge, that is needed to understand such things as network monitoring and data surveillance technology. The study of an insider threat is not only knowing why an individual would seek to steal access from their employers, but learning what to watch for in network analysis and monitoring. As for me l believe that the optimal solution would be to employ a mix of a specialist cyber units, but also train patrol officers and detectives in the methods of identifying and reporting Digital Evidence since it is an part of almost every current and future crime we are asked to investigate
