CYSE 406

CYSE 406 – Cyber Law

This course explored the legal and policy issues that arise in the digital and cybersecurity world. Topics included constitutional law, privacy rights, cybercrime investigations, intellectual property in cyberspace, and the legal limits placed on government and private sector activities involving digital information. The course also examined major cybersecurity laws such as the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), privacy protections under the Fourth Amendment, and international legal considerations related to cyber operations.

One major assignment in this course involved analyzing proposed cybersecurity legislation such as the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA). In this paper, I summarized the proposed law, examined its intended purpose, and evaluated its strengths and weaknesses in improving national cybersecurity efforts. This assignment helped me understand how legislation can influence how organizations share threat intelligence and respond to cyber threats.

Another assignment involved researching and evaluating a cybersecurity law designed to improve digital security practices. I analyzed the purpose of the law, how it attempts to address cybersecurity challenges, and whether the law is likely to achieve its intended goals. Through this assignment I gained a better understanding of how legal frameworks support cybersecurity efforts and how laws impact both government agencies and private sector organizations.

This course strengthened my understanding of the legal environment surrounding cybersecurity and highlighted the importance of legal and ethical considerations when protecting digital systems and investigating cyber incidents.

First Amendment Questions and the Digital World

This assignment explored how First Amendment protections apply in the digital world, particularly in relation to social media platforms, misinformation, and content moderation. The goal of the project was to analyze how free speech laws interact with modern online communication and how technology companies influence the spread of information.

In this assignment I examined several real-world situations involving free speech and online platforms. Topics included how social media companies moderate content, how misinformation spreads online, and how legal protections such as the First Amendment apply to digital communication. I also evaluated situations where speech may be limited, such as when it threatens public safety or spreads harmful misinformation.

Through this project I developed a stronger understanding of the legal challenges that arise in the digital age. The assignment showed how the internet has changed the way people share information and how legal frameworks must adapt to address issues such as misinformation, online speech, and platform responsibility. This project helped me understand the relationship between cybersecurity, technology policy, and constitutional law.
