This page features a series of PowerPoint projects completed during the writing workshops for IDS 300W: Interdisciplinary Theory and Concepts. Each project visually represents a different stage of the Repko and Szostak 10-STEP interdisciplinary research process, including a visual research map, a data table of insights and references, an analysis of disciplinary quotes, and a final visual argument connecting all steps. Together, these projects demonstrate how interdisciplinary research strategies can be organized and applied to complex real-world problems.

Visual Mapping of the 10-STEP Research Process

This assignment asked me to creatively represent the Repko and Szostak 10-STEP interdisciplinary research process through a visual format. Using the concept of “mapping,” I designed a flowchart that reflects how I planned to approach interdisciplinary research at the beginning of the course. The project encouraged creativity by incorporating words, images, shapes, and other design elements to show how each step in the research process connects. This visual map helped me better understand how interdisciplinary research integrates multiple perspectives to address complex questions.

Data Table of Research Insights & References

For this assignment, I created a visual flowchart to represent the Repko and Szostak 10-STEP interdisciplinary research process. Using the mapping strategy discussed in the course, I designed a creative visual that outlines how each step connects to the next in solving complex interdisciplinary problems. By incorporating words, shapes, and design elements, I was able to show how multiple disciplinary perspectives can work together to address a research question. This project helped me better understand the structure of interdisciplinary research and allowed me to personalize the process based on my academic and professional interests.

Disciplinary Quotes Analysis

For this assignment, I created a table that organized important quotes and insights from scholarly sources across three different disciplines related to my research question. Using Table 9.2 from the textbook as a guide, I selected key quotes and paraphrases that reflected critical disciplinary perspectives and organized them by field of study. I included in-text APA citations for each quote and compiled a complete reference list following APA guidelines. This workshop helped me strengthen my research paper by identifying areas of common ground and conflicting ideas between disciplines, and by practicing proper academic citation skills. The project also encouraged me to think critically about how different academic fields approach complex problems and how their insights could be integrated into my interdisciplinary research.

Final Visual Argument Applying the 10-STEP Model

For this assignment, I created a final visual representation explaining how I applied each of the 10 STEPs from the Repko and Szostak interdisciplinary research model to my specific research question. Unlike the first workshop, which focused on planning the research process, this project documented what I did during each step while completing my interdisciplinary research paper. The goal of this assignment was to reflect on how the research process unfolded in practice, using creativity to visually represent the connections between steps and disciplines. Completing this final visual argument helped strengthen my understanding of interdisciplinary integration and allowed me to demonstrate how the structured process supported the development of my final research project.
