For this semester-long professional connection assignment, I reached out to Tempestt Brevard, a respected professional within the athletic department at Old Dominion University. As a sport management major and student-athlete, I wanted to connect with someone who understands both the administrative and student development sides of collegiate athletics. Tempestt Brevard stood out because of her leadership, professionalism, and visible impact within ODU Athletics.

Tempestt Brevard serves in an administrative role within ODU Athletics, where she supports student-athletes and contributes to the daily operations that keep Division I programs running smoothly. Her responsibilities include coordinating athletic initiatives, supporting compliance and academic development efforts, and serving as a resource for student-athletes navigating their collegiate careers. She is known for her commitment to mentorship and creating opportunities for student-athletes to grow beyond their sport. Her work reflects the behind-the-scenes leadership that is essential in college athletics but often goes unnoticed by fans.

The process of making this connection was both intentional and professional. I began by researching ODU Athletics staff members whose career paths aligned with my interests in sport management and leadership. After identifying Ms. Brevard as someone I admired professionally, I drafted a respectful email introducing myself, explaining the purpose of the assignment, and expressing genuine interest in learning from her experience in collegiate athletics. I made sure to highlight my background as a member of the ODU basketball team and my long-term goals of working in the sport industry. Within a few days, she responded warmly and agreed to serve as my professional contact for the semester.

This experience reinforced the importance of networking in the sport industry. Building professional relationships requires initiative, preparation, and confidence. Reaching out respectfully and clearly communicating my goals demonstrated maturity and seriousness about my career path. I am excited to learn from Tempestt Brevard this semester, gain insight into athletic administration, and continue developing the professional skills necessary to succeed in the sport industry.
