The Genieve Shelter
At my internship site, I was able to gain experience working as a human services professional. I was able to work independently, which guided me in my decision making with real life experiences.
Throughout my internship, I was able to learn how to case manage. I conducted intake forms for shelter and community clients. I provided empathy and understanding to distressed clients while answering hotline calls. I formed treatment plans and assessments for clients. I provided resources and made referrals for clients. I called clients to conduct wellness checks. I coordinated support services while helping clients find affordable housing. Lastly, I accompanied legal advocate in domestic relations court involving protective orders, emergency protective orders, permanent protective orders, and domestic disputes.
As I reflect back on my experience, I am able to work independently, show empathy, have confidence in my decision making, take effective notes, and overall enhance my helping skills as a human services professional.
A effective skill that I have acquired is being able to plan, organize, and prioritize my work. When I case manage, it is important to organize clients and their needs. By doing this, this helps me with time management and goal setting.
This experience will relate to my future goals by preventing work burnout. When I am able to organize and prioritize my work, I am able to avoid stressful situations that comes from unorganized work.
