NICE Framework Review

The National Initiative for Cybersecurity Careers and Studies released a revision for the NICE Framework in July of 2020. This initiative is to help college students focus their studies in certain areas that they would like to pursue a career in. The areas I plan to focus on the most are Analysis, Investigation, and the ability to Protect and Defend. All three of these categories line up with my end goal of becoming a penetration tester. If I were to pursue a career in analysis I would want to focus my studies on both exploitation analysis and threat analysis. Exploitation analysis, is looking at a system from the top down to identify vulnerabilities and how they can be exploited. If I decided to pursue a career in Threat analysis I would be able to help law enforcement track down malicious entities through various channels. Pursuing a career in investigation, would put me on a strong track to become a cyber investigator. Pursuing a career in protection in defense would help me tie all previous careers into one. For instance I could work in Incident response, and when a natural disaster hits, I could be part of a team that not only brings the networks back up but also ensures they are secured from attacks by potential malicious actors. In review I have found that all of these careers tie into each other, and in order to pursue one of the careers you have to educate yourself on the other fields in question. The category I am least interested in is the Securely provision. The reason for this is because these are the visionaries that build entire secure systems from the ground up. I would rather be the one that finds the vulnerabilities in the system and not the one who built it.
