The use of computers in the workplace has created a lot of new opportunities for deviance that didn’t really exist before now. Like Payne explains, the reason people commit these crimes haven’t really changed much, but the advance of technology makes it easier to actually do them. Employees now have access to things like company data, financial systems, and internal networks, which give them more chances to misuse that access. For example, instead of physically stealing something, someone could have just moved money digitally or leaked private information without anyone noticing right away.

The line between white collar crime and cyber security is also starting become a blur. Someone could use their normal job access to do something illegal, like changing records or stealing customer data, without the risk of being caught. A good example would be someone in IT creating a hidden way to get back into a system later. This shows how regular job responsibilities can turn into opportunities for cyber related deviance.

Annuity also changes how people think about getting caught. Stealing something in person feels risky because you could be seen, but doing something online can make you feel more protected. Even though there are still ways to track digital activity, it doesn’t always feel that way to the person doing it. Because of that, people might think it’s easier to get away with, which lowers the risk in their mind. Overall technology hasn’t changed why people commit deviance, but it has definitely made it easier and more tempting.
