By using the data Breach Chronology, researchers will be able to see trends of various
breaches throughout the country. These trends can be very diverse ranging from the times
that the breaches were reported to the source of the breach. The website is so expansive
that researchers can see what type of organizations, such as healthcare and education,
are being directly targeted. Narrowing down which breaches are happening to which type of
organization can link researchers the revelations such as why certain types of threat actors
would go after specific types of organization or why the attack surface of said organization
is being targeted at certain times in their life cycle. This research can prevent future
breaches by giving these organizations specific through lines for where the attacks are
coming from, as well as what should be prioritized when planning countermeasures.
The social science that would benefit the most from this research would be economists.
This is because the world’s financial economy revolves around modern technology and is
largely digital. It is important for the research aspect of economists because financial
organizations such as banks are heavy targets for hackers since the main goal of hacking
usually revolves around financial gain. Economists being able to include how much money
is lost through hacking is a very important aspect that they must consider while looking at
how these actions cause a ripple effect on the rest of the economic landscape. When an
economist is hired by companies to see trends in the market, data breaches should be
considered potential for profit loss.
