Article #2

The Article I selecting to review this go round is “Cyberattacks, cyber threats, and attitudes toward cybersecurity policies”. They key focus in this article is the impact of different levels of cyber threats influences people’s opinion on cybersecurity policies. A lot of these policies went into effect in early 2020 as 40 US states and territories introduced more than 280 cybersecurity related bills and resolutions as stated in the article. Because of the increase in attacks around that time from this was put in action. Which makes since the more we are on top of what is going we will see policies and stipulations put in place in regard to cybersecurity.

The method of research in this article they used was through a controlled survey amongst three groups. The first group was people exposed to lethal and non-lethal cyberattacks will have a greater support for new cyber policies. The second group was those who were exposed to lethal attackers have a higher support then those who experience non-lethal attackers. Then the last group was threat perception would build the relation between attackers and support of new cyber policies. To study their hypothesis, they would expose each group to different levels of cyber threats. Through there examination they concluded that the different types of exposure have a big impact to there support of new cyber policies. They found that those who were exposed to the lethal threats showed more support of inputting the policies. But they did find through there study that the different type of exposure had an affect on the support of specific cyber policies. Other factors they add would need to be revaluated with further studies to investigate how fear appeals intervene as well which I found interesting.

This article relates to the principles of science because exposure is what opens your eyes. I would say specifically the social factor aspect of it. Specifically, things from module 10 stands out with Kathleen Carley and her 7 research areas stated in the PowerPoint. The one point about Information Maneuvers, with policies being put in place I would consider policies as a form of information maneuver ship. You take what you’ve learned and implement it in ways that benefit.

All in all, this study was broken down well with the charts and results to support their hypothesis. It just goes to show the more threats we have the more room there is for growth. In addition to more policies to be put in place potentially and policies to be changed.
