Diversity

For this experience I took HMSV 346: Diversity Issues in Human Services. This class was great and it allowed me to view different perspectives as well as go over the myths and stereotypes that people make about every race, gender, culture, ethnicity, etc.  The individuals that were in this class were all comfortable with expressing their views about different socio-identities which made the class more fun and exciting to come to. We would also have debates in the class also, but during the debates no one made another person feel bad for having a different view. The project below provided an overview about gender, such as what is it, the stereotypes and the comparison of each gender.

Skills used in this experience:

  • work in a team structure
  • communicate verbally

Gender

Above is an example of a project I did with a group of other students in my diversity class.  Working on this project was very interesting. I got to work with a group of students that had different views on gender and it was nice hearing what each individual had to say. The class was broken down into different groups and each group had a different subgroup they had to research and present to the class. In my group, I helped delegate each person in the group was going to do. Another skill used in this course was communication. I had to present a topic in front of 30 students in a professional manner. This meant that I needed to maintain eye contact and feel confident with what I was teaching to the class. This experience will help me in the future in many ways. One it provided me with how socio-identifies influence each individuals’ ability to function. Being culturally competent is a huge skill nurses should have. Each individual’s view is different which means when I am a nurse I need to take this into account and individualize a plan of care specific to each patient that will take consider their culture, gender, religion, race, etc.
