When it comes to the eight motives, money ranks highest in my opinion, and multiple reasons make the least sense. Money is the biggest motivator in the world, and when you hear about hackers stealing things, it’s most commonly for money. People will do almost anything for money. Next would be political motives because some hackers choose to attack something to make a statement, like targeting a corrupt company that they believe is doing evil things. They believe that they are standing up for what they believe in, and it’s right because of that. Next would be revenge; hackers will commonly target people who have wronged them in the past so they can get back at them and hurt them. It could be an old employer who wrongfully fired them, and they want revenge, so they would hack into the company and delete important files. Recognition would be next because there are people who hack things just to prove that they’re the best at what they do; they want to become “famous” for their skills. Everything is competitive, including hacking; people want to be known for being the “best” at what they do, almost like a competition. Curiosity would follow because some people just want to see if they can do it, and their intentions may not be bad at first but can lead to worse issues later. Someone may not have heard about hacking and then decide they want to give it a shot to see what happens, and that could be harmless at first, but if they become addicted to it, there could be legal issues. Boredom would be because the hackers are looking for something fun to do to pass time. Everyone tries new things when they’re bored, and that isn’t always a good thing. Entertainment would be the hackers doing it just for fun and to mess with people without trying to cause harm. Someone could hack into someone’s laptop and make their solitaire game glitch out to be funny. Multiple reasons make the least sense because when hackers have multiple reasons for choosing to hack, we can’t predict their motivation so we can figure out how to stop them.
