Being raised in a family where my father was a doctor, my grandfather was a dentist and my aunt was a nurse, I saw the passionate level of care they’d given and the selflessness of being there to care for others. I wanted to use my education, experiences, and creative instincts to take part in finding solutions through science and medicine to help others just as I have witnessed my family has done my whole life. 

I have spent several years volunteering at my fathers’ practice, my grandfathers’ practice, as well as a veterinary clinic in preparation of my medical future. From a young age I would spend time at my fathers’ practice, long before I was old enough to volunteer or work. I observed how he treated his patience and how his staff functioned. I even knew as a young child that this is what I imagined myself doing in the future. I volunteered at my grandfathers’ dental practice as well, and work and volunteered for an equine vet. The years I spent volunteering and working for these different medical fields helped to cement my foundation and has given me the direction I needed to determine what I want to do in the medical field with my future.

I am currently focusing on my academic studies and I am working towards fulfilling the necessary requirements to achieve this goal.  Volunteering at my grandfathers’ dental practice has helped me determine that dentistry is the field in which I want to further my education. Another factor that has led me to want to pursue this field is the fact that I was born with genetic defects that required me to undergo extensive surgical and dental work. I want to be able to help better other people’s lives in the way others have helped better my life. 

            I am not your average college student. Through my life experiences, challenges and innate curiosity, I am confident that this is not just a choice but a calling. While the future will still hold many obstacles and challenges, I am confident that with the proper education, focused attention and good old fashion hard work, I will fulfill my goals. As the lyrics say “the future looks bright I have to wear shades!”
