More than a Medal: Team USA’s Tribute to Johnny Gaudreau
Johnny Gaudreau was a 31 year old professional ice hockey player. He was nicknamed “Johnny Hockey” and recognized all over the world for his very elite skills and playmaking on the ice. Professionally, Gaudreau played in the National Hockey League for 11 seasons, mostly with the Calgary Flames in Calgary, Alberta in Canada and the Columbus Blue Jackets found in Columbus, Ohio. He was a very skilled forward that is known to be one of the most creative offensive players in his time, even though he was considered small at a height of 5’9”.
In 2024, Gaudreau represented Team USA internationally in the 2024 World Championship and was expected to be a key player for Team USA in the 2026 Olympics. Due to a tragic incident, Gaudreau never had the opportunity to make it to and compete in the 2026 Winter Olympics.
On August 29, 2024 Johnny Gaudreau was struck from behind by a car while riding a bike and killed. Both Johnny and his brother Matthew were on an evening bike ride the night before their sister’s wedding when a driver attempting to pass traffic, ended up hitting the two of them. Both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested and charged with death by auto. The Gaudreau family, all together for an exciting time and family celebration, quickly turned to mourning as two of their family members had been lost that night.
The word of Johnny Gaudreau’s death quickly spread across the world and made a deep emotional connection to the sports world. The National Hockey League in the United States and International hockey world faced a great shock. In the time after his death, memorials appeared outside of ice hockey arenas all over the world. Along with that, every NHL team in the United States issued statements about the tragedy and their deep condolences. Other sports also honored Gaudreau, as moments of silence and tributes were held in his honor.
Johnny Gaudreau’s legacy seemed to show rather quickly through all the ways that he had been honored. It also showed recognition of how tight the hockey community and culture is. Everyone came together to honor such an amazing player that had such a great impact.
Gaudreau was also very close with his family. His wife, who is now widowed, Meredith Gaudreau and two kids Johnny Jr. and Noa, were the center of his life. After his death, the family created The John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation that focused on youth ice hockey and supporting families that are affected by different tragedies and drunk drivers.
About 14 months later, the 2026 Winter Olympics began. Gaudreau’s absence was felt deeply as he was expected to play a major role for the United States team. Throughout the games, Team USA honored Gaudreau. A number 13 jersey was kept in the locker room as a way to symbolize Johnny’s presence with the team. Many of the players emphasized how his death became a motivational reckon for them. They explained how they were playing for Johnny and holding his spirit with them close.
In the time span of the games, Team USA made it to the Gold Medal Finals where they defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime. This was the first U.S. Men’s Ice Hockey gold medal since 1980 and the victory was such a historic moment for the United States. Emotions were also heightened due to the absence of Gaudreau.
After the win, the team rushed the field to celebrate. Players carried Gaudreau’s number 13 jersey out onto the ice with them as a tribute. The jersey was included in the official gold medal photo of the team. Players on the team also brought out Gaudreau’s children, Johnny Jr. who turned 2 that day, and Noa, age 3, onto the ice for a photo. The children were placed front and center in photo, bringing a rush of emotion and bigger meaning to the moment. Fans in the stands chanted “Johnny Hockey” as such a legacy had been lost and deserved to be honored.
Meredith Gaudreau, now widowed, expressed great emotion and gratitude after the tribute. She said “They didn’t have to do that…I was just very, very proud, and I’m very thankful to them for including my kids in it.”
Gaudreau’s sister, Katie Gaudreau also discussed how powerful and supportive the tribute was and how much it meant to her in such an emotional moment. “Team USA really went above and beyond. It meant the world,” she said.
Despite Johnny Gaudreau not being physically present, he was a constant motivation for Team USA. All of the tributes that took place to honor him showed the true brotherhood and loyalty found within the hockey culture. Bringing his children onto the ice after the game turned a national moment into a very personal one and his kids were able to experience the love of his teammates and the surrounding community. This moment helped turn such grief into an abundance of pride and remembrance for Johnny Gaudreau.
