Throughout this sport communication course I was able to learn and gain a lot of insight on things that take place behind the scenes in sports. I plan to take this knowledge and the skills I have learned into my future career aspirations.
One of the modules that really stood out to me was the sport and social media one. In today’s day and age, social media has grown and become a part of everyday lives so I liked learning about the influence athletes can have when using it. I find it very interesting how quickly news is able to spread on social media and how fans can engage in real time. I liked doing the assignment on my own social media and creating my social media persona. It made me realize that my social media does, in a way, tell a story, even though I wasn’t intentionally trying to do that. I think using social media properly can be very beneficial in my future when working in sports because of how much influence it has and how quickly information is able to spread.
The sport journalism module also stood out to me because I liked “pretending” that I was a sports journalist for the assignments we did. I really enjoyed writing my feature story. I was able to not only learn a lot about the tragic death of Jonny Graudreau and the impact of it in the 2026 Winter Olympics, but I also felt like I had an emotional connection to it as I hope others who read it do too. Having a good background on writing stories like this can be very beneficial. I don’t know exactly what I want to do when I am older, but I think having this knowledge can help me be more marketable and successful.
Before this course, I don’t think I really realized how much goes into athletics before the games actually take place. I knew there was the event planning aspect of it and then covering the games in real time, but I didn’t realize the history behind it and how it has grown to where it is today. This course has provided that to me and I am now able to see the impact and importance of knowing the history of sport along with the impact that social media, journalism, and society have on sports and the world as a whole. Sport organization communication also puts a lot into internal and external communication and they have to deal with any unexpected events or crisis which was new knowledge for me.
Overall, I would like to take this knowledge into whatever future career I decide to pursue while also noticing the continuous growth sport communication has on a daily basis.
