Position Assignment

The Growing Family: Ethical Paper

NURS 332 The Growing Family

Purpose of this Assignment: To examine a controversial or politically or publicly debated women’s health, obstetric or neonatal issue and present both sides equally.

Student Approach to Assignment: When approaching this assignment, I wanted to choose a controversial topic that I was not familiar with. I decided to do it this way because I did not want to go into the assignment already having a bias towards one side. This helped me with my research and with maintaining an equal focus on both sides.

Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio: I decided to include this assignment in my portfolio because it addresses a strong, controversial topic that deserves more discussion. I chose the topic of in vitro fertilization and the ethical issues surrounding this treatment. This paper shows a strong ethical debate on both sides of the IVF controversy.

  • Domain 7: System-Based Practice
    • End of program learning outcome 35: Describe the impact of healthcare cost and payment models on the delivery, access, and quality of care. (Domain 7) (7.1,7.3)
      • On page two of this paper, I discuss the Alabama Supreme Court ruling on the legal consequences of discarding a frozen embryo. Prohibiting embryo disposal results in indefinite cryopreservation, increasing the costs. This is not a financial option for many couples, directly affecting access to care.
        • Page 2, paragraph 3; page 3, paragraph 1
  • Domain 4, 7: Scholarship for the Nursing Discipline, System-Based Practice
    • End of program learning outcome 37: Considers the impact of research outcomes and the effects of health and social policies on persons from diverse backgrounds. (Domains 4, 7) (4.2,7.1,7.3)
      • Throughout this paper, I discuss the effects the Alabama Supreme Court ruling has on patients of diverse backgrounds seeking IVF treatment. Increasing the cost of IVF and restricting access impact patients who cannot afford the higher cost or the cost of travel (page 2, paragraph 3). In this paper, I also note that IVF practices in other countries differ from those in the U.S. Different countries have different policies, which affect patients’ choices and access to care (page 4, paragraph 1). The mention of religious viewpoints dives farther into the discussion of the decision-making process of patients from diverse backgrounds (page 3, paragraph 2).
  • Domain 9: Professionalism
    • End of program learning outcome 41: Apply principles of professional nursing ethics and human rights in patient care and professional situations. (Domain 9) (9.3, 9.4, 9.6)
      • This paper discusses ethical principles surrounding IVF treatment and how they affect the human rights of the patients and health care workers. With the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling, health care providers and patients who discard the embryo could face legal consequences. The patient’s personal rights, as well as the dynamics for IVF practitioners and clinics, are affected by this ruling. Focusing on the ethics in this situation protects the patients’ rights, the clinics, and the clinic workers.
