NURS 480: Leadership
Purpose of this Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to describe a nursing or patient care concern that needs improvement and analyze the significance of the concern for nursing practice in relation to the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competences.
Student Approach to Assignment: When approaching this assignment, I picked a nursing concern that I have seen firsthand in the clinical setting. Seeing how poor communication can affect the quality and safety of care provided to the patient fostered my approach to this assignment. I wanted to research ways healthcare facilities can educate their workers on proper communication techniques.
Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio: I included this assignment in my portfolio because it demonstrates my ability to focus on a critical nursing issue and apply scholarly evidence to improve patient care. Proposing solutions using SBAR and targeted training demonstrates my readiness to improve communication and collaboration at the bedside.

- In this discussion post, I emphasize the nurse’s role in communication and collaboration among interprofessional team members. I highlighted how using effective communication tools, such as SBAR, can reduce miscommunication and improve patient outcomes. Proper communication also promotes patient safety, prevents errors, and allows near misses to be caught before they harm the patient. Lastly, I analyzed approaches such as team training and simulation-based learning to educate nurses on stronger communication techniques.
