Telehealth Teaching Assignment

NURS: 417 Informatics 

Purpose of this Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to apply telehealth principles to a patient teaching interaction.

Student Approach to Assignment: When approaching this assignment, I watched telehealth etiquette videos provided by the professor, as well as others found online, to ensure I was comfortable with the steps involved in telehealth appointments. I then decided that my patient was going to be my step-mother and that I was going to go through a total hysterectomy discharge teaching with her. Being in the post-anesthesia care unit for my role transition, I need to do discharge teaching to patients and their family members, and I thought that doing the same for this assignment would give me practice for my clinical days. I made sure to research important hysterectomy discharge instructions and practice before meeting with the patient. 

Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio: I included this assignment in my portfolio because it demonstrates my ability to provide effective patient care through telehealth appointments. It also shows that I can have positive patient interactions without interruptions.

    • Creating this video allowed me to learn more about what it takes to complete a telehealth appointment. I made sure I had all the information I needed for the patient in front of me, as getting up would have been inappropriate. I also ensured the patient was in a place where they felt comfortable discussing their current health status. My patient was one week post-op for a hysterectomy, so I educated her on things like infection control and activity.

    • In this assignment, I demonstrated my skills using technology, informatics, and communication devices by conducting a Zoom appointment with my patient. I had to understand the technology on my device and Zoom to set up the appointment, and I also had to educate my patient ahead of time on how to join the appointment.
