There have been many impactful and interesting events that have played a role in the future of the sports industry. These events have started/ stemmed from Muhammad Ali in 1967 all the way to Naomi Osaka and dealing with the event of police brutality. One person that I will be talking about is Chloe Kim. Chloe Kim is 24 years old and is an Olympic snowboarder. The story of Chloe Kim is very inspiring and touching. When Chloe was just 17 years old, she become the youngest woman to win an Olympic snowboarding gold medal at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. This was amazing but what happened afterwards was rather devastating. While becoming so famous at a young age can be feel amazing but it also took a rather big toll on her mental health. In the year of 2020 during the covid-19 pandemic this just added her even more stress with the aspect of not being able to socialize much. Chloe began to seek help which led her to attend therapy. Therapy helped Chloe feel more valid for what she was feeling. She decided that it was best if she took some time off to attend college for a year. This helped her. The most important thing for her was to just get back to doing things to just enjoy her environment for example just cruising with her friends or reading her favorite book. Instead of feeling overwhelmed with the hardcore training that she had to endure most of her life. Dealing with mental health is a big issue that the world has definitely seen become more active in the conversation of athletes/ people in today’s society and with the addition of the media being so vast/ accessible it can cause those feelings to worsen in a blink of an eye if people online are weighing on an issue, they really have no idea what’s happing internally. Chloe has 1million followers on social media and this played a big role during this time because the internet was calling her and other Asian Pacific island racist slurs leading to more anxiety, especially with her family back home led to them calling her to check in on her and her on them it was just all around a lot of hate. It is important that even though mental health is a never-ending journey it is important to be gentle and kind to yourself and allow yourself to be human and take some of the pressure of themselves some of the time. I think that Chloe Kim’s story/history and platform provides those who may be struggling with mental health and light at the end of the tunnel knowing that even on the professional side of the sports industry they are still human too and deal with those same issues.
